About The Position

Under administrative direction, the Head Coach is responsible for planning, administering, and evaluating the overall operation of the NCAA Division I Women’s Water Polo Program. This includes academic achievement of student-athletes, on-deck coaching, recruitment of qualified prospects, hiring and supervision of assistant coaches and other assigned staff, compliance, program management (eligibility, scheduling, travel, budget, equipment), and student-athlete welfare. The coach is responsible for ensuring team competitiveness within the conference and achieving post-season competition. The role involves promoting the institutional position on intercollegiate issues and organizing, conducting, directing, and evaluating practices and competitions. The coach teaches fundamental skills to modern techniques and strategies, directs conditioning and training, and ensures student-athlete safety. A strategic recruiting program is developed to evaluate, recruit, and select qualified prospects, with an emphasis on diversity and assisting prospects through the application process. Collaboration with Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Student-Athlete Academic Services is essential. The coach makes contacts via phone, correspondence, off-campus visits, and coordinates campus visits. Scholarship recommendations are made to the Athletics Director. The role oversees academic progress and success, promoting an environment that encourages academic achievement, retention, and graduation. It also promotes and maintains an environment prioritizing the physical, mental, social, and academic well-being of student-athletes, preventing interference with their scholastic or athletic interests. A positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship are fostered, with responsibility for the conduct of team members on and off the deck. Budget recommendations and administration are required, along with overseeing equipment selection, purchase, fitting, and upkeep in collaboration with the equipment manager. Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over assistant coaches and support staff, ensuring compliance with NCAA, Conference, and University rules. Data and reports are prepared as needed, and recommendations for future competitive schedules, personnel, financial, and facilities requirements are made to the Athletics Director. Competitive competition schedules are arranged, and travel is coordinated. Sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps are organized and participated in as approved. The coach confers with the Athletics Director on program requirements and actively cultivates and participates in fundraising, promotional activities, speaking engagements, and alumni events. Public relations activities are undertaken to strengthen the University-Community relationship. Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) initiatives are built, developed, and/or managed in collaboration with UHMAD to benefit water polo student-athletes. The head coach is responsible for the actions of all institutional staff members reporting to them, promoting an atmosphere of compliance, and monitoring their activities. Duties of a Campus Security Authority are performed, and confidentiality is maintained in accordance with laws and policies. Collaborative working relationships are maintained with various internal and external stakeholders. Compliance with all governing laws, policies, rules, and regulations is required, and any suspected violations must be immediately reported. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree and three (3) years of experience coaching water polo at the college or university level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to organize, implement and develop a successful water polo program as played at the Division I collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit academically and athletically prepared Division I student-athletes.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, foster, and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel and work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lead/supervise/evaluate assistant coaches/staff.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.
  • Required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 45 days of employment start date.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Computer, cell phone, social media and water polo related software technology competency.

  • Knowing, recognizing and complying with the laws, policies, rules and regulations governing the University of Hawai‘i and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences.
  • Immediately advising the Director of Athletics or designee if there is reasonable cause to believe violations have occurred or will occur.
