About The Position

SAIC is looking for a Head Trainer to be based out of our San Diego, CA location, with heavy travel requirements. In this role, the successful candidate will be required to provide oversight and technical direction to staff, responsible for developing and implementing training plans for groups of animals in accordance to U.S. Navy directives and needs, and performing dive support as a diver or dive supervisor.

Requirements

• Perform dive support as a diver or dive supervisor.
• Advanced scuba skills are required.
• Pass a swim & dive test.
• Ability to work flexible work hours including weekends and holidays.
• Ability to travel with animals for extended periods of time anywhere in the world.
• Ability to travel to potentially harsh environmental and high-risk locations, within 72 hours’ notice.

• Oversight of dive station tasking.

Responsibilities

• Operation and maintenance of small watercraft.
• Feeding and administration of food supplements, advanced husbandry, and observation of marine mammals.
• Designated as primary handler for multiple animals, executing individual training plans for specific animals.
• Performs tasks related to the care and training of marine mammals for specific marine mammal projects.
• Scuba diving and oversight of dive station tasking.
• Working outdoors on boats in adverse weather conditions.
• Deterring the presence of nuisance animals following established NIWC processes and procedures.
• Travel comprising approximately 90% of this job, including the ability to travel with animals for extended periods of time anywhere in the world.
• Destinations could include potentially harsh environmental and high-risk locations, within 72 hours’ notice.
