About The Position

The Blaze Swim Club Team Coach is responsible for managing and directing the Blaze Swim Club program under the supervision of the Community Education Aquatics Coordinator. The coach oversees all practices and swim meets and ensures swim club members receive individual and group instruction tailored to the needs and skill ability of each individual.

Requirements

  • USA Swimming Coach Certification
  • Current Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid or Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification (American Red Cross preferred, others as approved by CE Aquatic Coordinator – must convert to ARC within 1 year of hire date).
  • Trainings required by Johnston Community School District
  • Trainings required by Community Education
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Nice To Haves

  • Competitive swimming background preferred
  • Knowledge of competitive swimming structure and club operations preferred
  • Knowledge of instructing and coaching developmental and competitive swimming preferred

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety of all swimmers.
  • Be aware of all medical conditions of all swimmers on team.
  • Record all accidents/injuries, ejections, employee absence or discipline, and other incidents on appropriate forms.
  • Be on deck and prepared to deliver program before swimmers arrive.
  • Ensure swimmers are supervised during practice and at all swim meets.
  • Inspect pool facilities for cleanliness and to ensure safety of swimmers, address issues and report any maintenance problems.
  • Ensure all equipment used during practices and/or swim meets is in sound condition and stored properly following events.
  • Ensure all Blaze coach certifications are current for coaches on-deck or responsible for supervising swimmers.
  • Communicate with participants, parents, coaches and pool staff.
  • Serve as most visible leader of the Blaze Swim Club by being present for team activities and available to parents and swimmers before and after meets.
  • Listen to parents’ concerns/issues with respect and work towards a win-win outcome; communicate with swim team coaches, pool manager and Aquatic Coordinator to resolve issues.
  • Report all on-site complaints in regard to Blaze Swim Club.
  • Clarify rules, regulations and expectations of swimmers and parents, and communicate prior to each session.
  • Maintain timely and accurate information with Blaze swimmers.
  • Organize and run swim team practices and meets.
  • Create daily workouts.
  • Manage schedule to not exceed 30 hours.
  • Develop team goals and strategies for a successful competition swim season.
  • Ensure fair practice and swim meet experiences.
  • Attend as many practices and meets as possible within the 30-hour limit.
  • Maintain attendance records for practices.
  • Attend all assigned meetings.
  • Perform other duties and functions as necessary or incidental to the performance of position.
  • Display professional behavior when representing Balze Swim Club, Johnston Community Education, and the Johnston Community School District.
  • Contribute to creating a positive work environment by being engaged and serving as a positive role model/representative of the department/district.
  • Maintain positive relationships with coworkers, parents, community members and participants.
  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to follow direction with minimal supervision.

  • Provide instruction/leadership/management of program implementation related to specific job responsibilities.
  • Perform light to moderate manual labor to assist with implementation of program.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or higher-level leadership
