About The Position

The Head Start Preschool Teacher is responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and management of classroom activities and providing services necessary to meet Head Start Performance Standards. This role involves creating a safe and nurturing learning environment, implementing curriculum, observing and assessing children, and engaging with families.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in ECE or TCC/CDA with Associate’s Degree (for HS Teacher I)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in ECE or TCC/CDA with Bachelor’s Degree (for HS Teacher II)
  • Master’s Degree in ECE or TCC/CDA with Master’s Degree (for HS Teacher III)
  • One to three years of experience (for Level 2 compensation)
  • BA/emphasis on infant & toddler development (for salary $19.24)
  • MA/emphasis on infant & toddler development (for salary $19.96)

Responsibilities

  • Maintains confidentiality about issues concerning other staff members, children, and families.
  • Respects and observes children's interests, intervening when needed to maintain safety and enhancing play with language, toys, and activities.
  • Communicates directly with each child at their level, engaging and communicating constructively during activities and routines, and positively extending children's thinking and actions.
  • Stays responsive to children's needs, questions, and requests.
  • Encourages and models social behavior and expectations that are developmentally appropriate.
  • Acknowledges feelings with sensitivity and demonstrates appropriate expression of emotions.
  • Practices positive discipline techniques according to NAEYC, Bright from the Start, and Caring for our Children Basics.
  • Stays attentive, flexible, and supportive of children and their families during transitions.
  • Implements daily lesson plans and daily schedules.
  • Records observations in Teaching Strategies GOLD.
  • Organizes and maintains learning centers within the classroom.
  • Recruits volunteers and solicits in-kind contributions.
  • Attends meetings, trainings, and workshops as required.
  • Maintains cleanliness of classrooms and adjoining restrooms.
  • Serves as an advocate for the Head Start Program, families, and children.
  • Implements a developmentally appropriate curriculum reflecting observations and assessments of individual children and goals jointly developed with parents/guardians.
  • Maintains order using a positive approach to behavior management.
  • Completes mandated screening & assessments of the children.
  • Completes daily health & anecdotal observations of children.
  • Completes Home Visits and Parent Teacher Conferences a minimum of twice a year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
