About The Position

Reporting to the Studio Director, the Head of Structural Design is a dual role, responsible for both the day-to-day designing, detailing and engineering of corrugate displays (from prototype through to production) as well as leading and motivating a team of like minded ArtiosCAD experts. The Head of Structural Design will have an excellent technical background and understanding of the material and the processes of building displays that focuses on quality, assembly, stability, functionality, production efficiencies and budget. You will build on an already strong and capable structural design team by refining and advancing technical excellence, process discipline, and innovation. The Head of Structural Design will work with the Head of Graphic Design and Studio Coordinator to manage all design projects and ensure proper resource allocation and scheduling within the design department.

Requirements

  • 10 + years of experience in designing and engineering semi-permanent corrugate POP displays
  • 5 + years of experience in leading people
  • Postsecondary education in Packaging Design, Industrial Design, Engineering, Architecture, Graphic Design or equivalent experience
  • Advanced experience using ArtiosCAD specific to the retail design and POP industry
  • Working knowledge of ArtiosCAD programming
  • Experience using a Kongsberg cutting table
  • Experience using Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)
  • Advanced knowledge of corrugate substrates and manufacturing processes
  • Experience working with Graphic Designers with an expert understanding and knowledge of printing processes
  • Effective teamwork capabilities
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple competing priorities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to produce sketches (informal and formal)

  • Process improvement mindset/Lean certification is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Regularly report on your team’s metrics
  • Proactively analyze workflows and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Ensure new solutions are documented and standardized
  • Work cross-functionally with graphic design, sales, production, and suppliers to ensure design accuracy and execution
  • Lead innovation initiatives on the Structural Design team
  • Lead and support your team through coaching, performance management, and maintaining design process consistency
  • Stay current on industry trends, materials, software, and technologies through tradeshows, events, and customer brainstorming sessions
  • Develop CAD specifications, 3D models, or sketches for client presentations
  • Lead your team to ensure On-Time In-Full delivery and adherence to deadlines
  • Monitor project timelines, scope changes, budgets, and workload while proactively resolving issues and risks
  • Review design briefs and ensure all project requirements and deliverables are clearly understood
  • Prepare bills of materials, production files, tooling die files, and instruction sheets for production teams
  • Collaborate with prototype technicians to assemble, test, validate, and improve display designs
