Head of Risk
About The Position
Mitigating risk is essential to Chariot's growth; this seat is where it ultimately lives. The Head of Risk will own Chariot's risk surface end to end, including technological, security/infra, fraud, and product risk. This role involves building and maintaining a living catalog of Chariot's risk exposure, partnering closely with engineering to pressure-test core payment flows, and deeply understanding the product and technology to anticipate and mitigate risks proactively. The position also requires establishing proactive monitoring and mitigation cadences, applying systems-level thinking to risk identification and closure, and building upon existing risk and compliance coverage. Strategically, the Head of Risk will sit at the leadership table, briefing leadership on top business risks with mitigation plans, and partnering with Product and Engineering to ensure new features incorporate risk considerations without hindering velocity.
Requirements
- 5+ years in risk, fraud, trust & safety, or a related operating role, ideally at a fintech, payments, or marketplace company
- First-principles and systems thinker with genuine technical and product depth
- Detail oriented with excellent written/verbal communication skills
- Proactive with strong people skills and ability to influence internal and Engineering/Product stakeholders
- Comfortable working collaboratively in a fast-moving, cross-functional team environment
- Team player with an ownership mindset and an eagerness to take on more work whenever possible
- Relentlessly curious about how our product and technology work, with a proactive instinct to map out everything that could go wrong
Responsibilities
- Own Chariot's risk surface end to end: technological, security/infra, fraud, and product risk
- Build and maintain a living catalog of Chariot's risk exposure that stays current
- Partner closely with engineering to pressure-test our core payment flows: where they break, what the blast radius is, and how we mitigate it
- Understand our product and technology deeply enough to see risks around the corner and get ahead of them, rather than reacting after the fact
- Stand up a proactive monitoring and mitigation cadence across the risk surface
- Bring first-principles, systems-level thinking to how we identify, prioritize, and close risk gaps
- Build on and formalize existing interim risk and compliance coverage rather than duplicating it
- Sit at the leadership table: brief leadership regularly on the top risks facing the business, prioritized from first principles, each with a mitigation plan
- Partner with Product and Engineering so new features ship with risk accounted for, without slowing velocity
