About The Position

Reporting to the Library Director, this position will oversee all public-facing library services including reference, circulation and faculty services, teach legal research, manage the reference desk and related services, and manage the library’s liaison programs. The role involves managing the research, faculty services, and instructional services program, developing and overseeing library reference services, and overseeing the circulation and interlibrary loan program. It also includes overseeing the library’s faculty liaison program, designing and implementing assessment measures for faculty satisfaction, and providing in-depth research assistance to faculty and their RA’s. The position requires providing research and reference assistance to law library patrons, including students, alumni, and members of the local bar, and delivering legal research instruction to UC Law SF students and faculty through various formats. Additionally, the role involves co-teaching for-credit research courses, creating and updating online legal research guides and tutorials, participating in the selection and evaluation of library resources, contributing to strategic initiatives, and maintaining professional engagement in law librarianship. Collaboration with law school departments and participation in the law school community are also expected.

Requirements

  • Master of Library and Information Science degree from an ALA-accredited program, or significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree.
  • JD degree from an ABA-accredited institution.
  • A minimum of five years professional academic law library or related experience.
  • Knowledge of legal materials and research methodology using electronic and print resources.
  • Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations, including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated interest in and ability to teach.
  • Comfort and aptitude with technology.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and analytical skills.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and ability to propose new projects and workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the research, faculty services, and instructional services program.
  • Develop and oversees library reference services, including in-depth research assistance, instructional sessions, and outreach to the community.
  • Oversee the circulation and interlibrary loan program.
  • Oversee the library’s faculty liaison program.
  • Design and implement assessment measures to gauge faculty satisfaction with library services.
  • Provide in-depth research assistance to faculty and their RA’s.

  • Co-teach for-credit asynchronous and synchronous research courses in the law school curriculum.
  • Create and update online legal research guides, video tutorials, and library aids.
  • Participate in the selection of print and electronic resources for the collection.
  • Assist in the evaluation and weeding of the library’s collections.
  • Contribute to the library's strategic initiatives and participate in the planning and implementation of new library programs and procedures.
  • Maintain an active interest in the profession of law librarianship by attending seminars and conferences, monitoring professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.
  • Facilitate collaborative relationships across law school departments.
  • Participate in the life of the law school by attending events and volunteering for projects and committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
