Head of Product - SLS

Formlabs•Somerville, MA
•Onsite

About The Position

Formlabs is seeking an exceptional hardware product leader to own and grow its SLS hardware business. This role offers the autonomy of a startup founder with the backing of a scaled company. The Head of Product will lead major hardware programs from concept to launch, define roadmap strategy for the SLS product line, and make critical decisions for the company's success in additive manufacturing. The ideal candidate has a background in founding companies, shipping physical products, and competing at a high level. While a background in 3D printing is not required, the role demands technical depth across materials, robotics, and software, strong commercial acumen, marketing skills, data proficiency, and leadership qualities such as drive, grit, and a desire to win. The company values a bias for action, comfort with ambiguity, and deep ownership over outcomes. The successful leader will have a sharp understanding of customer value, a clear view of technical and commercial feasibility, and the ability to make challenging trade-offs to build exceptional products quickly.

Requirements

  • Experience founding a company or leading major hardware programs/multiple generation products.
  • Experience owning vision, P&L, roadmap, results, and team simultaneously.
  • Understanding of how roadmap strategy, technical hardware decisions, customer acquisition, and manufacturing operations must work in harmony.
  • Possess the builder's mindset: creativity to imagine what is possible, and the ability and willingness to do whatever it takes to make it real.
  • Proven ability to get results without enough money, time, or people.
  • Grit and resilience when the work gets difficult.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in 3D printing, additive manufacturing, or adjacent physical product categories.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline.
  • MBA or equivalent experience owning a P&L or leading a high-growth GTM motion.
  • Familiarity with hardware manufacturing standards and compliance (ISO, medical, aerospace, etc.).
  • Strong proficiency with data - exploration, extracting signal from noise, sizing markets, and presenting findings in a way that drives decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full hardware product roadmap for the SLS business, across discovery, definition, development, and delivery, supported by strong customer insights and market analysis, through program execution and launch.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams across engineering, design, manufacturing, and commercial functions.
  • Make high-stakes decisions on product positioning, hardware architecture tradeoffs, and go-to-market timing.
  • Represent the voice of the customer inside the building, and the voice of the product in front of customers.
  • Partner deeply with engineering leadership to pressure-test feasibility, identify issues, and find solutions.
  • Operate with urgency and find ways to make progress without waiting for permission.
