Head of Design, Product Design
About The Position
BitGo is seeking a design leader who is still actively designing and can lead a shift towards a design-forward company. This role is a player-coach position, requiring the individual to manage and mentor the design team, own the design system, and contribute to business strategy alongside the Chief Product Officer. The Head of Design will be responsible for carrying their own design surfaces and shipping them, alongside leading the team, with an initial expectation of roughly 50% hands-on individual contributor work. The design team is small, senior, and self-sufficient, with each designer owning a specific product vertical. The new leader will be expected to integrate early with product and engineering, critique craft, provide clear direction, and shield the team from distractions to enable deep work.
Requirements
- Experience leading design in financial services, with a strong preference for digital assets or complex technical flows.
- Proven experience building and owning a design system at scale.
- Hands-on proficiency in Figma and a role model for design craft.
- Deep understanding of UX, strong product thinking, logical reasoning, and data-driven decision-making.
- Experience managing designers and fostering their growth.
- Technical literacy, including comfort with APIs, data models, and engineering trade-offs.
- Direct and clear communication style, capable of holding positions and adapting based on strong arguments.
- Desire to lead the transformation of a technical, compliance-heavy platform into a design-led one.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in regulated environments such as broker-dealer, trust company, bank, or qualified custodian.
- Experience with complex permissioning, approval workflows, or multi-entity account structures.
- Design leadership experience at a company that successfully underwent a similar transformation.
Responsibilities
- Own and ship your own design work, setting the quality bar for the team.
- Manage and invest in the growth of individual designers, providing candid feedback and opportunities for advancement.
- Amplify the design team's visibility, voice, and strategic impact within the company.
- Represent design in strategy, roadmap, and architecture conversations, advocating for the client experience.
- Involve design early in the discovery process with product and engineering to shape long-term roadmaps.
- Own the design system and component library end-to-end, including tokens, patterns, governance, and adoption.
- Design the platform's systems and shared primitives, not just individual screens.
- Establish UX and systems thinking as an organizational practice.
- Define and implement processes for a small team to move fast without losing quality, including critique, documentation, and handoffs.
- Engage with technical designs, understand constraints, and collaborate with engineering on compromises and broader changes.
- Be the internal and external face of BitGo design.
