About The Position

ClassDojo is seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial, and high-energy leader to oversee and scale all aspects of the Company’s accounting and tax operations and strategy. This role offers the opportunity to own additional related areas such as procurement. The successful candidate will be responsible for building and scaling financial systems, processes, and policies to support the financial health and efficient scaling of the entire business. Key responsibilities include overseeing the company’s monthly close process, annual audits, financial reporting, and overall control processes, aiming to generate utmost confidence in the quality of financial reports and processes for internal and external stakeholders. The role involves managing the in-house accounting team and external consultants, covering GL, AP, technical/revenue accounting, financial reporting, payroll, equity, tax, and treasury. This position requires close collaboration with various stakeholders across the organization, including business unit leaders and functional leaders in Strategic Finance, People, Engineering, and Legal. The Head of Accounting will also support the CFO and other executives on strategic initiatives such as M&A, fundraising, secondary transactions, and a potential future IPO. This role reports directly to the CFO.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of experience, with 3+ years at a top-tier audit firm and 8+ years in-house accounting at fast-growing startups, with diverse and increasing levels of responsibility culminating in a controller or assistant controller role.
  • Experience building and retaining an accounting team of meaningful scale and complexity, including both managers and individual contributors.
  • Experience designing and managing full-cycle accounting close and operations, and managing related areas including tax, treasury, payroll, and equity administration.
  • Experience leading accounting teams through multiple clean audits with Big Four firms.
  • Proven ability to apply knowledge of US GAAP to complex business transactions, successfully documenting clear conclusions, establishing practical business processes, and defending accounting positions directly to external auditors.
  • Proven track record of scaling finance operations through major process or systems overhauls, including experience incorporating AI-powered workflows.
  • Experience overseeing global indirect tax compliance, including US sales tax and international VAT/GST.
  • Leadership: Proven record of finding and nurturing high potential talent and instilling a sense of integrity and ownership.
  • Cross-functional effectiveness: Demonstrated ability to implement financial systems and processes with meaningful cross functional impact to support growth in volume and complexity of the business.
  • Technical accounting acumen: Subject matter expertise in key US GAAP standards (including ASC 606, ASC 718, ASC 805, and ASC 350), with the ability to independently identify complex issues early in the transaction lifecycle.
  • Strategic mindset: Deep curiosity for the company’s products and business strategy, and how these could impact accounting decisions. Ability to articulate these decisions effectively in communications with external partners and internal leaders.
  • Scrappiness: Tendency to prioritize rigorously and preference for quality over volume. Demonstrated growth-mindset and willingness to own additional areas of responsibility as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a lead-level accounting role at a public tech company
  • Experience with emerging AI-native finance tooling, e.g. Rillet
  • Experience with complex businesses (multiple products with different revenue models)
  • Experience with business combination accounting and integrations
  • An active CPA license

Responsibilities

  • Salary ranges (United States): CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT states: $220,000 - $300,000 (USD), All other states in the US: $187,000 - $255,000 (USD)
