About The Position

The Connecticut Department of Correction is seeking a Head Nurse for the York Correctional Institution in East Lyme, CT. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position on first shift, Monday-Friday, 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. The role supports the Department of Correction’s Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) program by overseeing detox nursing care, coordinating nursing staff, and collaborating with leadership to support patient care and program operations. The York Correctional Institution is a high-security facility for female offenders and includes an 80-bed intensive, inpatient drug treatment unit.

Requirements

Current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language.
Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
Possess and retain a current license or temporary permit as a Registered Nurse in Connecticut OR hold a Multistate or Compact Registered Nurse license.

Experience with managing detoxification nursing supply inventory, including oversight of ordering and tracking medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), such as methadone and Suboxone.
Experience with assigning caseloads and overseeing the work of detoxification nurses.
Experience working with adolescents or in women's health or mental health care.
Fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.
Possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
Travel may be required.

Responsibilities

Contributes to nursing operational standards by providing feedback to Health Services Nursing and Addiction Services leadership; supports implementation of productivity, quality, and service standards; identifies and helps resolve system challenges.
Serves as primary liaison for internal and external multidisciplinary teams; participates in and reports on program activities during interdisciplinary meetings.
Identifies offender needs through professional engagement and coordination with custody, health services, addiction services, and community partners.
Collaborates with Nursing Leadership to maintain and update nursing guidelines, practices, and procedures.
Ensures quality of care by applying nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and agency policies; evaluates health outcomes and recommends improvements.
Oversees detox nursing care by monitoring staff performance and clinical practices.
Provides information and support to offenders and staff; participates in the grievance response process.
Protects confidentiality and ensures secure handling of offender health information.
Audits documentation and records to ensure accurate, complete, and compliant patient care records.
Prepares reports, data summaries, and documentation required by leadership.
Manages detox nursing supply inventory, including oversight of MOUD medication ordering and tracking (e.g., Methadone, Suboxone).
Assigns caseloads and provides oversight to Detox Nurses.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Leads planning of care and implementation of nursing process.
Coordinates nursing and/or mental health unit workflow.
Determines priorities; Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work.
Establishes and maintains unit procedures.
Identifies staff development needs; Provides staff training and assistance; Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations.
Ensures controlled drugs are properly stored, administered and ordered.
Leads professional and paraprofessional nursing staff in provision of inmate general and mental health care.
Instructs staff regarding policies and procedures.
Maintains and promotes standards of nursing.
Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures.
May participate in interdisciplinary meetings.
May make recommendations on policies or standards.
May prepare reports and correspondence.
May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist mental health and correction staff in emergencies.
Leads planning and implementation of infection control services for correctional inmates and individuals re-entering the community in order to protect the health and safety of inmates, staff and the public.
Assures quality performance in implementation of infection control program by contracted health care provider.
Provides education and training to inmates including infection prevention and control.
Monitors and ensures quality care through observation and evaluation.
Maintains records and makes reports.
May develop infection prevention curriculum and educational materials for inmate education.
