About The Position

The Head Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach is directly responsible for the junior varsity basketball team in accordance with the school’s mission of forming Disciples of Christ through a dynamic, excellence-driven Catholic education. The coach will strive to help each individual achieve a higher value of discipline, teamwork, good sportsmanship, academic achievement and self-esteem.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the game is paramount; extensive knowledge of current coaching techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of MHSAA, OK Conference and West Catholic Athletic Handbook policies, with demonstrated commitment to adhering to policies/standards.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries or complaints from students and/or parents.
  • Possess a high level of interpersonal skills, such as discretion, courtesy, integrity and flexibility, to establish and maintain effective and positive relationships with administrators, peers, student-athletes, community members and the general public.
  • Ability to relate to students and to teach them on and off the field.
  • Willingness to embrace a high level of accountability.
  • Possess the ability to assess players and coaches effectively.
  • Maintains poise under stressful situations.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and work independently and collaboratively, producing quality work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to make consistent decisions by establishing program standards and expectations.
  • Serves as a role model for all students, joyfully living their Catholic faith.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school is preferred.
  • College or high school coaching experience is preferred.
  • Must have a desire to work in a Catholic school and a concern for the well-being of student-athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive role model for students, coaching staff and the community while upholding the values of the Catholic faith.
  • Provide leadership that develops and promotes a unified athletic philosophy.
  • Cultivate relationships with current and prospective students.
  • Demonstrate proper sportsmanlike conduct and respect for players, officials, opponents, fans and other coaches.
  • Understand and maintain the standards of the West Catholic Athletic Handbook.
  • Maintain good public relations with parents, officials, players and fans.
  • Manage athletic activities, contests and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect and good sportsmanship.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff and school administration.
  • Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student-athletes.
  • Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities on a regular basis.
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect student-athletes.
  • Conduct a parent meeting prior to the start of the season.
  • Motivate student-athletes to participate and sustain interest in the program.
  • Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
  • Work with the Athletic Director to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements.
  • Supervise student-athletes during athletic competitions and program functions.
  • Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
  • Maintain proper files and copies of all pertinent MHSAA, OK Conference and West Catholic athletic policies, ensuring these guidelines are followed.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation at all times.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, teachers and administration.
  • Understand, support and perform roles in admissions, development and advancement.
  • Follow the set fundraising policies and procedures set by the development office.
  • Attend, participate and promote West Catholic fundraising events.
