About The Position

The Town of East Gwillimbury is now hiring Head Instructor Guards to staff our Health & Active Living Plaza during the fall season. Reporting to the Aquatics Coordinator, the Head Instructor Guards are an integral part of the Recreation & Culture Division. The Head Instructor Guard plays a pivotal role in overseeing the supervision and delivery of safe, high-quality aquatic programs and services for the Town of East Gwillimbury’s pool facility in compliance with provincial guidelines and Town standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 Years experience as Swim Instructor and Lifeguard.
  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Pool.
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification.
  • Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving and Emergency First Aid Instructor Certification.
  • Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisor Certification (Previously Aquatic Supervisor Training)
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certification (from Lifesaving Society, Red Cross, Canadian Ski Patrol or St. John’s Ambulance).
  • Ability to deal effectively and politely with staff, parents, program participants and the public.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Due to the nature of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) satisfactory to the Town (Those 17 Years & Older) or the completion of Declaration of Minors – Working with Vulnerable Individuals Self Declaration Form (Those 16 Years and Younger) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support aquatic staff, volunteers and any persons within the Aquatic Centre while on shift, ensuring compliance with safety standards, provincial guidelines and Town policies during all aquatic programming.
  • Respond to emergencies and perform First Aid and/or arrange for emergency services as needed.
  • Maintain a friendly, inclusive, accessible, and engaging aquatic environment.
  • Assist with the organization and delivery of high-quality, safe, and stimulating swimming lessons for all ages, following the Swim for Life Program standard.
  • Perform minor equipment and pool area maintenance including set-up and clean-up of pool, pool deck and changeroom area. Ensure instructional and aquatic safety equipment is stored safely in designated areas.
  • Serve as a role model for aquatic staff and participants by demonstrating professionalism, positivity, and commitment to high standards of aquatic safety and program delivery.
  • Respond to questions and concerns staff and the community and resolve and/or refer to appropriate staff.
  • Understand, adhere to, and support Corporate Policies, Aquatic Procedures, Swim for Life Ratios, Swim for Life Curriculum and Guidelines, Lifesaving Society Instructor Expectations, Confidentiality Guidelines, Emergency Procedures and Health and Safety Standards for all participants and staff.
  • Oversee the maintenance, inventory, and proper use of equipment and supplies within the Aquatic Centre.
  • Check, record, and maintain pool records such as bather loads; pool clarity, and changeroom checks in compliance with Public Health. Open and close pool facilities, perform inspections of pool equipment.
  • Implement and perform proper rescue techniques and emergency procedures for individuals requiring assistance due to difficulty, danger, or injury, and manage any situations or emergencies until they are resolved, ensuring effective communication and adherence to Aquatic Procedures. Complete all appropriate documentation.
  • Attend regularly scheduled in-service training programs and meetings, maintain certifications, skills and fitness levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Staff must be proficient in National Lifeguard physical standards and rescue skills, and the ability to adapt techniques to meet specific facility requirements.
  • All work activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety Policies and Procedures. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.
