About The Position

The Head Girls Basketball Coach is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the Brunswick High School Girls Basketball Program. The coach will develop a competitive program that emphasizes academic achievement, athletic excellence, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, character, and personal growth. The successful candidate will create a positive and inclusive environment that supports student-athletes both on and off the court while representing Brunswick County Public Schools and the Virginia High School League (VHSL) with professionalism and integrity.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years of secondary-level relevant coaching experience; previous Head Coach experience preferred.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification or ability to obtain prior to the start of the season.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals, game strategy, player development, VHSL rules, and effective coaching practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, sound judgment, and commitment to sportsmanship and student success.
  • Successful completion of all required Brunswick County Public Schools background checks and compliance with School Board policies and VHSL regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of basketball rules, strategies, player development, and game management.
  • Working knowledge of Virginia High School League (VHSL) rules, district regulations, and Brunswick County Public Schools athletic policies.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate, and mentor student-athletes and assistant coaches.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required administrative responsibilities.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Complete all required employment documentation, background checks, certifications, and Virginia High School League (VHSL) training in accordance with Brunswick County Public Schools policies and procedures.
  • Plan, organize, administer, and supervise all aspects of the girls basketball program, including practices, competitions, scheduling, and player development.
  • Instruct student-athletes in basketball fundamentals, game strategies, conditioning, injury prevention, sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, and character development while fostering academic success.
  • Develop organized practice plans, game strategies, and procedures that promote athlete safety, skill development, and competitive success.
  • Supervise student-athletes at all times during practices, contests, travel, and other team activities while ensuring appropriate conduct, safety, and transportation arrangements.
  • Maintain accurate records, including athlete eligibility, physical examinations, insurance forms, concussion acknowledgments, parent consent forms, equipment inventories, and other required program documentation.
  • Recruit, supervise, mentor, assign responsibilities to, and evaluate assistant coaches while promoting professional growth and ensuring compliance with program expectations.
  • Promote positive communication and sportsmanship among student-athletes, parents, booster organizations, school personnel, officials, media, and the community while representing Brunswick County Public Schools and VHSL with professionalism and integrity.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director, school administrators, faculty, transportation, maintenance, athletic trainers, and other staff to support the successful operation of the athletic program.
  • Encourage academic achievement and assist student-athletes interested in pursuing collegiate athletics by providing guidance and appropriate communication with colleges and universities.
  • Attend required VHSL meetings, rules clinics, and professional development activities; evaluate the program annually with the Athletic Director and recommend improvements.
  • Perform other duties related to the athletic program as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration.
