About The Position

Promote a fundamentally sound athletic program with emphasis on physical and skill development of the individual and to encourage a positive attitude toward fair play and sportsmanship. The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health. The position includes other unusual aspect such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments. It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

Requirements

  • Valid Iowa coaching certificate
  • Successful coaching experience at the secondary level (7-12)

Responsibilities

  • Instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.
  • Instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes.
  • Upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.
  • Implement approved athletic policies and ensure staff adherence.
  • Implement and interpret system, state, and league regulations consistently.
  • Refer all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Attend public, staff, and departmental meetings as required.
  • Organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff, and encourage professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and analyze staff effectiveness at the end of the season.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Assist the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
  • Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times.
  • Coordinate program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provide proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
  • Serve as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration of character traits.
  • Give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant by being present at all practices, games, and while traveling.
  • Provide training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete.
  • Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries and submit within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process when enforcement of discipline is necessary, and contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
  • Participate in the budgeting function with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season.
  • Recommend equipment guidelines.
  • Operate within budget appropriations.
  • Be accountable for all equipment and collect the cost of any lost or unreturned equipment.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submit annual inventory and current records.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, and authorize access.
  • Permit athletes to be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking general cleanliness.
  • Be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.
  • Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promote the sport within the school and outside the school.
  • Be responsible for the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Present information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
