About The Position

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in diagnoses and treatment of livestock in Feedlot by performing the following duties. This role involves carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints and resolving problems. The Head Doctor is responsible for administering treatment in a humane manner, internally examining dead animals to determine cause of death, and ensuring compliance with USDA/FDA regulations through accurate record-keeping. This position also manages medicine inventory, operates within department budget, ensures hospital cattle have sufficient feed and water, maintains hospital equipment, and models safe work practices. Communication of critical safety information through training and monitoring workplace behavior is essential, as is ensuring adherence to all applicable laws and company standards.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree; or equivalent related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Animal husbandry skills; knowledge of cattle breeds and characteristics
  • Knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software and Database software.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises 3-5 employees, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Assigns workers to inspect and medically treat livestock according to protocols established by management and consulting veterinarian; administers treatment in a humane manner.
  • Internally examines dead animals to determine cause of death.
  • Ensures that no animal leaves the facility without meeting applicable withdrawals by maintaining thorough and accurate hospital records and compliance with USDA/FDA regulations; data entry.
  • Manages medicine inventory by researching costs, designing inventory systems, determining inventory levels, anticipating needed supplies and placing orders; takes inventory monthly.
  • Operates within department budget; manages expenses by studying historical data, anticipating needs and researching costs.
  • Ensures that hospital cattle have sufficient feed and water by calling feed on hospital pens and checking water tanks; maintains cleanliness of feed bunks.
  • Maintains hospital equipment by preventative maintenance and scheduling necessary repairs.
  • Sets a positive example for employees by modeling safe work practices and following safety rules and policies.
  • Communicates critical safety information to employees by conducting regular safety training; monitors workplace for unsafe/noncompliant behavior.
  • Monitors department activities to assure adherence to applicable USDA, FDA, State and Federal laws, Company policies and Company standards through open communications with team.
