About The Position

This person will be working during the day in this capacity during regular school days and all Teacher/professional development work days. The Head Custodian's job goal is to assist in providing a clean, safe, and healthy environment conducive to learning. This is a 260-day, bi-weekly position.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Several years of experience in housekeeping.
  • Must be able to follow instructions, both written and oral.
  • Must be available for after hour emergencies.
  • Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with students, teachers and other staff using technical and/or professional languages.
  • Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the assigned school and Spartanburg School District Seven as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Head Custodian.
  • Knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of the age group assigned.
  • Knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling; has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use modern office practices and equipment, including computers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships and work effectively with adults and children.
  • Ability to supervise, guide and support students with patience and kindness.

Responsibilities

  • Opening the building each morning and securing the building at the end of each day as directed by Principal.
  • Inspecting the entire area for any problems that may have arisen overnight.
  • Inspecting the building each morning before students arrive for cleaning concerns: halls, cafeteria, gym, restrooms, and etc.
  • Inspecting the exterior for possible unauthorized entrance and/or vandalism.
  • Checking for heating and cooling problems and reporting if not operating properly.
  • Familiarity with all the emergency fire alarms in the building.
  • Checking all exit signs and lighting and changing bulbs when needed.
  • Making minor repairs as required.
  • Knowing where all fuse boxes, breakers boxes, and light switches are located so circuits can be cut off immediately in the event of an emergency.
  • Keeping all outside drain areas clean.
  • Assisting in setting up furniture for special events.
  • Picking up paper and other debris within assigned areas.
  • Keeping all grass and shrubbery neatly trimmed within assigned area.
  • Edging curbs and sidewalks, sweeping or blowing off sidewalks in assigned areas.
  • Removing grass and weeds from shrubbery neatly areas.
  • Spraying weed control to kill grass and weeds in parking areas and sidewalks.
  • Ordering supplies and assisting in receiving deliveries.
  • Dust mopping halls and cleaning entrance mats after students have arrived and thereafter a minimum of four times during the day.
  • Dust mopping the gym floor at least three times daily as applicable.
  • Keeping the boiler room clean.
  • Cleaning up after sick students as needed.
  • Taking care of emergencies and any other work as directed by the Principal.
  • Following instructions, both written and oral.
  • Being available for after-hour emergencies.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by Principal or Direct Custodial Supervisor.
  • Attending all mandatory training and meetings as required by the District Custodial Supervisor.
  • Working consistently with others in a cooperative and respectful manner.
