About The Position

The Head Custodian role at Ankeny High School is responsible for supervising custodial staff to ensure a clean, orderly, and safe environment. This position involves working alongside the team to perform a wide variety of cleaning and maintenance activities, ensuring the campus is attractive, sanitary, and safe for students, staff, and visitors. Duties include performing daily cleaning operations, preparing the building for activities and events, and collaborating with various school teams.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates computer proficiency
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises custodial staff at their assigned building, ensuring a clean, orderly, and safe environment.
  • Provides leadership that contributes to a positive work environment.
  • Works alongside the custodial team, performing cleaning and maintenance activities while ensuring high standards of quality and efficiency.
  • Develops and maintains effective communication with the custodial team, school personnel, and students.
  • Assigns and monitors daily cleaning schedules and maintenance tasks to custodial staff.
  • Trains new custodial staff on proper cleaning techniques, equipment use, and safety protocols.
  • Supports District maintenance staff for the purpose of completing site custodial activities.
  • Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeteria, multipurpose rooms, pools, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Inspects and evaluates the cleanliness and safety of the building, ensuring all custodial tasks meet district standards.
  • Performs minor, job related, maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture and fixtures (e.g. change vacuum cleaner belts, bags, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items.
  • Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strip/wax floors, moves furniture, painting, etc.) for the purpose of completing and/or facilitating summer construction.
  • Supports District maintenance staff (e.g. grounds, trades, general maintenance, etc.) for the purpose of completing site custodial activities.
  • Monitors activities in and around work areas (e.g. halls, multipurpose rooms, lunch room, restrooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring site safety.
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and protocols for the custodial team.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and/or potential liability.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
  • Prepares campus for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkway, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and hazard free.
  • Assists with setting up and taking down furniture and equipment for school events, meetings, and special events.
  • Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g. paper towels, soap, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
  • Builds and maintains positive and effective relationships with students, staff, parents, and community groups.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors to provide information, take appropriate action, and/or direct them to the correct personnel.
  • Informs site personnel regarding activities, safety issues, and proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Interprets and enforces district custodial policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
  • Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality.
  • Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
  • Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
