About The Position

This is a year-round, full-time position for a Head Custodian/Houseworker at Whitcomb Middle School. The role involves supervising custodial operations, ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the school facilities and grounds, managing supplies, coordinating maintenance, and overseeing building use. The position requires the ability to direct others, supervise and instruct custodial personnel, and perform manual labor. The Head Custodian/Houseworker is responsible for maintaining property values, protecting the health and safety of occupants, supporting educational objectives, and ensuring a positive learning environment. This includes securing the building daily, managing trash and grounds appearance, and coordinating repairs and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Must be able to supervise and instruct custodial personnel.
  • Physically fit to perform manual labor.
  • Ability to read, write and understand the English language.
  • Neat in appearance and maintain good moral character.
  • Basic computer skills, email and Microsoft Suite.
  • Must be a constructive contributing member of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of carpentry, painting, plumbing, cement work, electrical work, and maintenance of equipment is preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with Head Custodian daily to discuss issues and review work assignments.
  • Supervise all workers engaged in custodial operations on the second shift.
  • Check custodial runs for completion and resolve issues.
  • Ensure the appearance and upkeep of the grounds, including trash, courtyards, and grass areas.
  • Secure the building daily, ensuring all equipment and lights are off, systems are running normally, and all doors and windows are closed and secured, and the building is alarmed.
  • Assign work and supervise custodial personnel during summer cleaning operations and scheduled events.
  • Provide input on recommendations concerning hiring, workload, assignment, effectiveness, transfer, and dismissal of custodial personnel.
  • Report disciplinary problems such as tardiness, failure to meet work standards, unsafe work practices, and unprofessional conduct to the principal or Custodial Supervisor.
  • Assign custodians to summer work and events with principal approval.
  • Orient and instruct custodial personnel on duties and responsibilities.
  • Receive all incoming supplies and packages, replenish stock room supplies, and deliver packages.
  • Maintain custodial work schedule and working hours.
  • Coordinate overtime rotation and assign overtime as needed.
  • Confirm accuracy of all timesheets and sign off.
  • Maintain and complete weekly and monthly checklists for facilities, including doors, lights, generator, elevator, and security alarm.
  • Submit work orders for any discrepancies.
  • Submit verbal and written reports of vandalism to the principal.
  • Report vandalism to Marlborough Police Department and District Education Center in the absence of the principal.
  • Check school when called by Police or security company on off-hours and submit a written report.
  • Designate an alternate to be contacted in absence.
  • Complete minor repair work that does not require a licensed person.
  • Manage and coordinate building use.
  • Complete and manage work orders for all issues in and around the building, including plumbing, electrical, doors, windows, telephones, public announcement system, and IT issues.
  • Manage snow/ice removal operations for sidewalks and doorways.
  • Report other repairs and emergency repairs through the work order system.
  • Inform the principal of any issues that may disrupt normal building operations.
  • Perform all other general duties as indicated by directives of the principal, Director of Finance and Operations, Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Marlborough School Committee.
