About The Position

The Head Softball Coach oversees the West High School softball program and instructs the varsity team. The coach supports student-athletes in reaching their potential in the classroom and on the field, and supervises the program’s coaching staff, including varsity assistant, JV, and freshman coaches. The role includes planning and coordinating training, practices, games, schedules, conditioning, and program activities with other coaches and the Athletic Director. The coach provides feedback to student-athletes, helps enforce team policies, monitors attendance and grades in coordination with other coaches, and manages the program budget and fundraising efforts. The position is for the WIAA 2027 Spring Sports Season and involves weekday evenings and Saturdays, including work outdoors in varied weather and travel to district locations or off-site meetings as needed.

Requirements

Demonstrated ability to provide positive development and motivation of student-athletes.
If not holding a teaching license, successful completion of an approved coach’s education course (ASEP), or ability to complete it before the second coaching season.
Current CPR/AED certification from a national certifying organization, or ability to obtain it within one month of employment, and maintain certification.
Knowledge of softball skills, development, and game strategies.
Organizational skills related to softball.
Ability to plan progressive conditioning and developmental softball programs.
Ability to initiate and maintain communication with parents.
Commitment to year-round personal knowledge enhancement for continuous program development.
Ability to work cooperatively with other staff.
Successful completion of the required WIAA Rules Exam for softball by the 2026 spring sports season.

Nice To Haves

Strong softball background, preferably with high school-level experience.
Valid teaching license.
College playing or coaching experience.
Demonstrated ability to successfully implement softball systems in a high school setting.

Responsibilities

Oversee training of softball players in all positions in conjunction with other coaches.
Develop training plans for softball players in conjunction with other coaches.
Assist with running specific home-game events as directed by the Athletic Director.
Contribute to game lineup planning with other coaches.
Attend and coach all practices and games.
Assist other coaches in monitoring team members’ practice, school, and game attendance, as well as grades.
Assist other coaches in enforcing team policies.
Provide student-athletes with feedback about performance, disposition, behavior, and team skills.
Manage the softball program budget and organize fundraising efforts.
Coordinate competition and practice schedules with the Athletic Director.
Coordinate off-season training and conditioning for the softball program.
Supervise the softball program coaching staff, including varsity assistant, JV, and freshman coaches.
