About The Position

Selects, recruits, instructs and monitors student-athletes for Cross Country. Responsible for submitting preliminary budget, schedule, travel and equipment needs for Cross Country. Follows all rules and guidelines in accordance with the College, National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA). This position requires availability in the early afternoons, nights, and weekends during regular season.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree, credential, or equivalent credits from an accredited undergraduate institution or combination of education and experience is required.
  • Three or more years of experience serving as a coach in a college, high school or club setting required.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid Certified, or able to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s license with no restrictions.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and software including word processing, scheduling, e-mail, and spreadsheets required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communication effectively in written and oral formats including the ability to speak before large audiences.
  • Ability to add, subtract and apply concepts of basic statistics.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Health Promotion, or related field preferred.
  • College coaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides preliminary budget projections
  • Recruits prospective student-athletes in accordance with JC’s strategic enrollment management targets
  • Athletic and academic performance shall be considered
  • Submit list of recruits for grant approval (All grants/scholarships are awarded in accordance with an approved College budget and shall be approved by the Athletic Director.
  • Prepares the teams schedule
  • Develops an annual on/off season plan that includes goals for the program (Athletic, Academic, Fund Development and Community Service)
  • Supervision of assistant coaches, volunteers, and student-athletes (academic, practice and games)
  • Fosters sportsmanship and fair play
  • Coordinate practices schedules and trips
  • Manage team equipment including inventory, repair, and replacement (purchasing in accordance with approved budget guidelines and purchasing procedures)
  • Abide by all standards, rules and regulations of the NJCAA and MCCAA
  • Conform to the administrative policies of the College and the Athletic Department
  • Travel regulations - Maintain a good motor vehicle records for teams travel
  • Grants Purchasing Credit card use
  • Foster a positive image for the College and the Athletic Department
  • Promote and track student academic performance and community service.
  • Make appropriate referrals to College resources when a student is in need of academic assistance (i.e. not meeting satisfactory academic progress).
  • Assure team media information is accurate, current and complete (rosters, webpages, brochures, etc.)
  • Engage in athletic program fund development
  • Support student athlete preparation and referral when athletic and academic transfer is the goal
  • Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.
