About The Position

The Head Cheerleading Coach for Sussex Central Middle School is responsible for providing leadership, organization, and supervision for the middle school cheerleading program. This role involves all aspects of the program, including planning practices, developing skills, preparing for games and competitions, supervising assistant coaches, ensuring student-athlete safety, and adhering to all relevant policies and regulations.

Requirements

Experience coaching and/or participating in cheerleading at the high school level or higher preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of cheerleading fundamentals, stunt progression, competition preparation, and safety regulations.
Familiarity with VHSL rules, eligibility requirements, and cheerleading compliance standards.
Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Compliance with all background checks, school division hiring requirements, and VHSL coaching certifications.

Teaching certification preferred (may vary by school division).

Responsibilities

Plan, organize, and conduct all practices, conditioning sessions, and team activities for the middle school cheerleading program.
Teach and develop cheerleading fundamentals, including motions, jumps, stunts, tumbling, crowd-leading techniques, choreography, and performance skills appropriate to student-athlete ability levels.
Develop and implement routines and performances for athletic events, pep rallies, school functions, and VHSL-sanctioned competitions.
Promote school spirit and serve as a positive ambassador for Sussex Central Middle School at athletic and community events.
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaches while coordinating responsibilities within the coaching staff.
Monitor and enforce team rules, discipline, attendance, and conduct consistent with school, division, and VHSL policies.
Ensure student-athlete safety by teaching proper techniques, monitoring stunt progression, enforcing safety standards, and adhering to concussion and emergency response protocols.
Coordinate participation in athletic events, competitions, camps, clinics, and other approved events.
Maintain accurate records of athlete eligibility, attendance, competition requirements, and VHSL documentation.
Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, faculty, administration, and the athletic department.
Coordinate fundraising activities and team-building opportunities in accordance with school division guidelines.
Manage team equipment, uniforms, inventory, ordering, maintenance, and storage.
Attend required VHSL rules clinics, coaching education programs, and maintain all required certifications.
Promote academic achievement, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and character development among student-athletes.
Assist with recruitment and development of future cheerleaders through collaboration with middle school and youth programs when appropriate.
Represent Sussex Central Middle School and Sussex County Public Schools in a professional and positive manner within the community.
