About The Position

The Ford is seeking a Head Carpenter / Prop Master to manage both carpentry and prop-related duties for a variety of productions including local community-produced concerts, jazz/pop/rock concerts, small theatrical and opera productions, orchestral programming, and movie nights. This is a working Head position at a 1,200-seat outdoor amphitheater in Los Angeles, operated by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, which operates seasonally between May and October.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Head Carpenter or Assistant Carpenter.
  • Strong knowledge of orchestra set-ups, instrumentation, rigging, and stage carpentry.
  • Minimum OSHA 10 Certification required upon hire.
  • Must obtain OSHA 30 certification once hired.
  • Experience with staging and dance flooring.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Competency in and knowledge of safe theatrical stage working conditions and practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and technical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with management staff and visiting production teams.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to bend, stand, and walk—including navigating hilly terrain and stairs—for the duration of an entire work shift.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs. independently, and up to 150 lbs. with the assistance of other employees.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Union membership is a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Set, move, and strike risers, musician platforms, scenery, and stairways.
  • Regularly deploy and strike the sunshade over the stage and seating areas.
  • Ensure the successful and safe implementation of all stage and rigging equipment.
  • Set up and service the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
  • Perform duties including stage carpentry, rigging, prop construction, vendor coordination, and equipment/facility maintenance.
  • Supervise, train, and develop the stage crew; place necessary crew calls with the Local union as required.
  • Enter and maintain carpenter and prop department weekly payroll.
  • Attend weekly remote production meetings.
  • Partner with other departments to maintain a high quality of production.
  • Understand and adhere to the venue’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
