About The Position

The Program Head Coach must demonstrate strong leadership in player and staff development, integrity, sportsmanship, and character development. Qualified candidates should possess strong communication and organizational skills. They must demonstrate exceptional knowledge of the skills and strategies of their sport as it pertains to the policies of New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA). This role requires fostering an appreciation for athletics, a desire for high performance, good sportsmanship, and pride in self, team, school, family, and community. The head coach will play a major role in developing youth as future leaders, emphasizing positive communication, organizational skills, and safety awareness. A strong focus on academic excellence and assisting student-athletes with post-high school program applications (college, vocational training, military) is also a key aspect of this position. The head coach will direct training, conditioning, and performance, and supervise assistant coaches. They must demonstrate current knowledge of sports-specific strength and conditioning programs and execute them within NMAA regulations. Promoting the program within the school and community is essential. Bloomfield School District reserves the right to extend the deadline and update qualification requirements without notice. The position also includes performing other duties related to head athletic coaching as requested by the District Athletic Director.

Requirements

  • Valid [state] coach certification.
  • Employment as a teacher in school district.
  • Previous high school coaching experience required.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport.
  • Knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and willingness to continue to learn and examine new ideas pertinent to the assigned sport.
  • NFHS First Aid, Health and Safety certification on file.
  • NFHS Bullying certification on file.
  • NFHS Protecting students from abuse certification on file.
  • NFHS Concussion in sports certification on file.
  • CPR/AED certification on file.
  • Satisfactory background check (for external candidates).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, both verbally and written form, of each student's record, coaches' information, and athletic personnel.
  • Knowledge of electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentation, and telecommunications.
  • Defensive driving certification (if motor vehicle is necessary).

Responsibilities

  • Follow and uphold the policies and mission statement of Bloomfield School District.
  • Comply with all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, Public Education Department guidelines, and local/state/federal laws and the NMAA.
  • Foster among student-athletes, coaches, and spectators an appreciation for the values of athletics, a desire to perform at the highest levels, an attitude of good sportsmanship, and a sense of pride in self, team, school, family, and community.
  • Assume a major role in the development of youth as future leaders.
  • Emphasize the importance of academic excellence and assist in monitoring and maintaining high academic standards for members of the program.
  • Assist team members with applications to post-high school programs, college, vocational training, or the military.
  • Direct the training, conditioning, and performance of the program.
  • Lead and supervise assistant coaches in their efforts with teams assigned to them.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of sports-specific strength and conditioning programs and execute such programs during the off-season within the parameters of NMAA regulations.
  • Promote the program within the school and community.
  • Ensure that all coaches in the program are certified, licensed, and cleared by BSD Human Resources department.
  • Ensure that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of athletes are clearly communicated and followed.
  • Plan, organize, advertise, and conduct tryouts for the program, informing the district athletic director and participants of the final roster and maintaining the integrity of the selection process.
  • Consult with the district athletic director and provide information regarding off-season training programs, rules for the season, and try-out schedule criteria.
  • Work with the district athletic director in preparing practice and game or competition schedules.
  • Update athletic rosters onto the RankOne platform before the first game or competition, including any changes to student-athlete information, inventories, final season statistics, and an alphabetical list of award winners immediately following the season.
  • Maintain necessary records and complete required paperwork in a specified time and manner.
  • Ensure that all athletes have valid sports physical examinations before they can participate.
  • Ensure that proper forms (insurance, attendance, medical) are obtained and current, and that all student-athletes are academically eligible.
  • Make sure that all athletes have baseline Impact Tests prior to the first scrimmage.
  • Hold informational parent meetings at the beginning of each season for all levels.
  • Work directly with the school certified athletic trainer in reporting injuries, teaching precautions and procedures to ensure staff/student-athlete safety and injury prevention.
  • Complete BSD Accident report for any athlete injured within 24 hours, even if the student-athlete does not see a physician.
  • Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of student-athletes.
  • Ensure a certified coach is present at all team practices and competitions.
  • Ensure that proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms are adhered to, and update inventories.
  • Adhere to all financial policies of BSD regarding collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.
  • Make recommendations regarding the purchase of uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
  • Arrange and schedule bus transportation with the athletic office for athletic participants.
  • Travel with student-athletes on the team bus both to and from competitions, or ensure an assistant coach is present on the bus.
  • Enforce discipline policies and emphasize sportsmanship and healthy lifestyle.
  • Supervise student-athletes in locker rooms at home and away games and ensure appropriate behavior.
  • Check and secure all office, locker rooms, storage room, outside doors, and lights after the last player leaves after games and practices.
  • Explain and follow appropriate rules and regulations regarding the conduct and eligibility of athletic activities and student-athletes.
  • Always maintain a safe environment and facilities for student-athletes.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to local policy.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season's end, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Assist the athletic office in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times.
  • Coordinate program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment site.
  • Utilize and monitor RankOne Sport system for assigned sport.
  • Provide training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete.
  • Give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Aid, guide, and safeguard each participant by presence at all practices, games, and while traveling.
  • Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete reports of all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit to Athletic office within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process when enforcement of discipline is necessary, and contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
  • Participate in the budget process with the department as requested.
  • Recommend equipment guidelines as to type, style, color, or technical specifications.
  • Operate within budget appropriations.
  • Account for all equipment and collect the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submit annual inventory and current records.
  • Be responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor and assign equipment rooms and coaches' offices.
  • Permit athletes to be in authorized areas at the appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and check on general cleanliness of the facility.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building when custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
  • Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre-season meetings.
  • Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes that are not participating in sports.
  • Promote sports outside the school through news media and non-scholastic youth activities.
  • Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Present information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
  • Refer athletes with possible infections to a healthcare provider.
  • Instruct athletes with a potential or confirmed infection or open wound to avoid using whirlpools or therapy pools not cleaned between athletes and other common-use water facilities like swimming pools until infections and wounds are healed.
  • Review and implement cleaning and disinfecting guidelines recommended by CDC.
  • Educate athletes about ways to prevent spreading infection.
