About The Position

Coaches in the Port Angeles School District play a critical role in supporting the growth, safety, and well-being of student-athletes. Port Angeles High School is seeking a Head Boys Baseball Coach for the spring season. The Head Coach will oversee all aspects of the boys baseball program, including skill development, field management, game preparation, and program administration across Varsity and Junior Varsity levels. The regular spring baseball season runs from March 1st through May 29th. During this season, coaches must be available for weekday practices and games, with potential Saturday responsibilities. In addition to the spring competitive season, the successful candidate must be available to support off-season baseball programming and summer player development, as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Previous playing or coaching experience in baseball.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of baseball fundamentals, rules, game strategy, and baseball etiquette.
  • Ability to plan and execute effective practice sessions, hitting and pitching mechanics instruction, and game management strategies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with the school athletic department, local ballpark/facility personnel, student-athletes, and parents.
  • Availability to commit to weekday practice/game schedules and occasional Saturday events during the season (March 1 - May 29).
  • Willingness and ability to drive school district vans to transport student-athletes to away games and practice facilities.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record to meet district driver clearance requirements.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and administrative skills.
  • Must meet or be willing to obtain all WIAA coaching certification requirements.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain prior to the start of the season.
  • Must be willing to complete all district-required safety and compliance training.
  • Ability to maintain student confidentiality and adhere strictly to district and school policies.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the boys baseball program, including skill development, field management, game preparation, and program administration across Varsity and Junior Varsity levels.
  • Support off-season baseball programming and summer player development.
  • Inform athletes and parents of inherent risks associated with athletic participation.
  • Ensure drills, practice plans, and conditioning match the skill level and physical readiness of the athletes.
  • Inspect practice facilities, batting cages, and field conditions for safety hazards prior to competition and practice.
  • Ensure team equipment and protective gear are safely maintained and properly stored.
  • Provide safe, current, and effective instruction on baseball technique, rules, and game strategy to prevent injury and promote athlete development.
  • Maintain adequate supervision of student-athletes on the field, at practice facilities, and during team travel.
  • Maintain athletic decorum, sportsmanship, and appropriate behavior in alignment with school policy.
  • Drive district vans to transport team members safely to and from practice fields and away competitions in compliance with district transportation policies.
  • Monitor environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, lightning) and ensure proper hydration and athlete safety on the field.
  • Respond promptly to injuries with basic first aid and execute emergency action plans when necessary.
  • Timely log game results, injury reports, facility issues, and administrative documentation as required.
