About The Position

BB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Hazardous Waste Technician for BB&E’s NASA Glenn Research Center located in Neil A Armstrong Test Facility (GRC-ATF), formerly known as the Plum Brook Station, in Erie County, Ohio. This role involves comprehensive hazardous waste management, including collection, segregation, processing, packaging, manifesting, and tracking of various waste streams. The technician will also provide guidance to waste generators, coordinate pickups, and perform inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to successfully pass a federal agency background check is required.
  • Experience preparing hazardous waste turn-in, shipping, and tracking documents.
  • Prior hazardous waste lab pack disposal experience.
  • Practical knowledge of HW management, a solid understanding of hazardous material identification and management.
  • Familiarity with sources of information pertaining to chemical and radiological hazards.
  • The ability to safely move and load heavy drums and containers containing harmful products.
  • Handling, processing, packaging, and tracking hazardous waste for shipment, treatment, and disposal.
  • Familiarity with hazardous waste regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and State and Federal Hazardous Waste regulations.
  • Problem-solving skills to identify and address any issues that may arise during the waste management process, minimizing risks and preventing accidents.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency using MS Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Highly motivated, with the ability to solve problems and function as a member of a team.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ related experience is required.
  • 24-hour HAZWOPER training is required.
  • RCRA Haz Waste Management Certification is required.
  • DOT HazMat Shipping and Storage certification is required.
  • A minimum of a high school degree is required.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting hazardous waste research and development (R&D) lab waste.
  • Collecting medical waste.
  • Segregating and processing hazardous waste according to hazard class.
  • Bulking various types of solvents for flammable liquid & non-RCRA liquid drums.
  • Lab packing hazardous waste & medical waste.
  • Performing hazardous waste pick-ups, on-site transportation, waste sampling, waste classification, waste packaging, manifesting, and tracking of waste containers from cradle-to-grave.
  • Providing support and guidance to hazardous waste generators regarding proper labeling, storage, and management of hazardous waste.
  • Coordinating pick up of hazardous waste and mixed waste within three (3) business days of receipt of a fully completed Form A and safely transporting hazardous waste on-site back to the less than 90-day accumulation area and/or radioactive waste storage facility using a government-provided vehicle.
  • Coordinating pickup, storing, and preparing for shipment medical waste generated at the Center according to regulatory requirements.
  • Performing hazardous waste sampling activities and preparing paperwork and samples for shipment to a State-certified laboratory.
  • Performing PCB wipe sampling activities and preparing paperwork and samples for shipment to a State-certified laboratory.
  • Properly segregating and storing hazardous waste by hazard class and compatibility.
  • Coordinating provision of all containers needed for the storage and disposal of hazardous waste to all hazardous waste generators.
  • Classifying and packaging hazardous waste and preparing for shipment and disposal offsite.
  • Preparing a properly executed Uniform Hazardous Waste manifest for signature by an authorized NASA representative from the EMD.
  • Maintaining records related to hazardous waste disposal, including analytical results, waste profiles, manifests, and land ban forms.
  • Bulking inorganic acid & bases and entering data into tracking system.
  • Picking up and transporting unused, unopened chemicals to the Ames Chemical Exchange (ACE) program for reuse or recycling and maintaining accurate inventory of chemicals.
  • Picking up and transporting unused, unopened chemicals to the Central Chemical Storage Facility for storage for future use by the owner and maintaining accurate inventory of chemicals.
  • Helping conduct quarterly inspections of all PCB-containing items at the Center and preparing PCB annual document log report for government approval.
  • Conducting and documenting weekly compliance inspections at the hazardous waste facilities.
  • Performing initial inspections for Satellite Accumulation Area Determinations.
  • Preparing monthly Hazardous Waste generator activity reports including generator name, waste location, organization code, waste storage date, item identification number, waste name and description, and weight.
  • Maintaining 24-hour HAZWOPER training and applicable US DOT Certification.
  • Providing support and participating in internal environmental regulatory compliance audits, annual self-assessments, and other audits and inspections.
