About The Position

The Hazardous Waste Technician II (HWT II) is an intermediate-level position within the Hazardous materials operations at Reworld Kitchener. The HWT II will be experienced and capable of conducting hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment utilizing the various technologies and chemicals available to them with minimal supervision. The HWT II will be proficient in handling, sorting, and consolidating hazardous materials received in the plant and onsite at customers’ locations. The HWT II is responsible for the identification, segregation, packaging, labeling, and transportation preparation of hazardous and non-hazardous chemical waste in accordance with Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Ontario regulatory requirements, and Reworld procedures. Working independently on site and at customer locations including hospitals, laboratories, universities, manufacturing facilities, and industrial sites, the Technician serves as a technical resource while ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient waste management solutions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is required
  • 2-5 years of experience in hazardous waste management, environmental services, laboratory operations, chemical handling, or a related industry
  • Valid Class G driver's licence with a satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to effectively communicate via written and verbal methods
  • Requires frequent travel to customer sites with occasional overnight travel, up to 15%

Nice To Haves

  • Diploma or degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemical Technology, or related field.
  • TDG certification
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
  • Previous hazardous waste, environmental services, laboratory, or industrial chemical experience
  • Experience with RPRA manifesting systems

Responsibilities

  • Safe and compliant execution of lab pack projects/jobs and the proper packaging of hazardous, non-hazardous, universal wastes and off-specification commercial products.
  • Independently manage customer-site projects, including waste identification, inventory collection, lab packing, regulatory documentation, and client communication while maintaining strong customer relationships and representing Reworld professionally.
  • Ensure waste packaging, labeling, documentation, container selection, and transportation activities comply with TDG, applicable Ontario regulations, and Reworld procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain shipping documentation, manifests, and related records in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
  • Ability to identify highly reactive or unstable chemicals and/or mixtures, to minimize handling and gather pertinent information for evaluation. Coordinate with leadership on a plan of action for these types of materials.
  • Responsible for overall quality control of the hazardous, non-hazardous and universal waste materials to be shipped and execute the loading and unloading of inbound and outbound shipments.
  • Assist in the evaluation and management of incoming waste streams to support safe handling, processing, and disposal decisions.
  • Maintain a neat and clean working environment and ensure availability of all supplies necessary for assigned tasks.
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements, company health and safety procedures, and all applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate sampling and analysis to determine the correct course of treatment for hazardous waste as prescribed by standard procedures and operational permits.
  • Treat waste by adding materials necessary to alter the chemical nature of solid and liquid waste in a manner that is always safe and secure.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including shredders, hand trucks, forklifts, and other power tools in accordance with company policies and procedures as well as Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
  • Advise and work with operation and transport teams to provide support on the safe and proper handling of hazardous waste.
  • Train, mentor, and coach junior staff members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
