About The Position

This position is responsible for the inspection of chicks in hatchers to ascertain quality and fitness for processing. The role involves pulling chicks and placing them for processing, properly disposing of substandard chicks in accordance with the company’s Animal Welfare policy, and operating high-pressure washers to clean trays, dollies, and the hatchery. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Must reside in the United States to be considered for an interview.
  • Must be able to read and write to record temperatures and turn-failures in setters and read temperature and humidity in incubators.
  • Must use safe lifting techniques.
  • Must regularly lift and stack chick boxes (wheeled dolly) weighing up to 12 pounds.
  • Must regularly be required to push or pull stacks of boxes up to 125 pounds.
  • Must be able to obtain scissor lift certification.
  • Must regularly be required to pull/push 700 to 1300 pounds (wheeled dolly).
  • Must regularly be required to stand majority of shift (concrete floor).
  • Must regularly be required to walk.
  • Must regularly be required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Must regularly be required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Must regularly be required to balance.
  • Must regularly be required to stoop.
  • Must regularly be required to talk or hear.
  • Must have close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must have good communication skills to accurately convey opinions and concerns.
  • Must be willing to sign an agreement to avoid any avian species (chickens, ducks, birds, etc.).
  • Must be willing to sign and abide by the Company Biosecurity and Company Animal Welfare Guidelines.
  • Must be willing to shower, change clothing and footwear before entering the facility.
  • No jewelry may be worn on the jobsite except for medical ID jewelry and body piercings covered by appropriate clothing.
  • Must complete the task after submitting an application to provide additional information to be considered for employment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect chicks in hatchers to ascertain quality and fitness for processing.
  • Pull chicks and place them for processing.
  • Properly dispose of substandard chicks in accordance with the company’s Animal Welfare policy.
  • Operate high-pressure washer to clean trays, dollies, and hatchery.
  • Operate a high-pressure hose to sanitize trays, dollies, hatchery, and equipment.
  • Pad approximately 1500 empty chick boxes weighing approximately 2 pounds each per shift.
  • Lift boxes of 100 chicks weighing approximately 15 pounds and put them into stacks of 10, 1500 times per shift.
  • Push 10 stacked boxes with birds averaging 15 pounds per box into a row approximately 150 times per shift.
  • Push/pull hatcher baskets on casters full of chicks into the Pull Room weighing approximately 500 – 1000 pounds.
  • Place up to 150,000 chicks weighing approximately 40 grams each onto a belt.
  • Take hatcher baskets off stacks of 15 high (each basket weighing approximately 35 pounds), which requires overhead lifting.
  • Put empty trays weighing approximately 10 pounds into the tray wash machine.
  • Take clean, empty trays out of the tray washer and restack them into stacks of 15 high approximately 1300 times per shift.
  • Record temperatures and turn-failures in setters and read temperature and humidity in incubators every three hours.
  • Wash and foam rooms using a high-pressure hose and regular water hose.
  • Pull loaded setter buggies on casters weighing approximately 700-1300 pounds.
  • Maintain boot washes and hand sanitizer.
  • Operate the box washer.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Properly euthanize weak/ill chicks in accordance with company policy.
  • Assist with sanitation when needed.
  • Complete daily checklists.
