About The Position

This position is responsible for inspecting and processing eggs for incubation, inspecting and processing chicks, and maintaining/cleaning the hatchery facility. Other duties may be assigned. The jobsite is a biosecure environment requiring showering and changing clothes before entering the facility. Appropriate clothing and footwear are provided. No jewelry may be worn except for medical ID jewelry and body piercings covered by appropriate clothing. Applicants must be willing to sign an agreement to avoid any avian species and abide by Company Biosecurity and Animal Welfare Guidelines. The successful candidate must be able to perform the physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Must use safe lifting techniques.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally move up to 1,000 pounds using tools such as a wheeled buggy.
  • Regularly required to stand majority of shift (concrete floor/padded floor); walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects and controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; climb/ladder usage; weekly changing of filters and lightbulbs; stoop/bend up to 1000 times per day; talk or hear; drive a vehicle within the farm complex.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Required to work on wet, slippery surfaces and in hot, dry, dusty, wet, icy, snowy and cold environments.
  • Required to wear safety goggles and/or glasses, face shield, chemical gloves, waterproof apron, and company-issued footwear.
  • Ear plugs will be used as required.
  • NIOSH approved N95 particulate respirators will be worn as needed.
  • Follow all applicable safety policies and procedures, including Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, LOTO and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Identify, address and mitigate safety related risks.

Responsibilities

  • Grade and transfer eggs from pedigree flocks for hatch.
  • Tray eggs, observing shell color and texture, yolk position, and air cell size; place hatching eggs in hatch buggies; place substandard eggs in a container.
  • Record data entry of egg and chick information onto a touch screen tablet.
  • Perform sanitation activities including operating a tray washer, removing eggshells, and cleaning/sanitizing setters, hatchers, egg rooms, tables, drains, and chick processing areas.
  • Participate in the hatch process by wingbanding chicks, vaccinating chicks, counting chicks, and delivering chicks to brooding houses.
  • Euthanize selected or substandard chicks by company-approved methods.
  • Clean hatchery office, break room, and restrooms; sanitize vehicles; assist with egg orders.
