About The Position

Wipro’s Security Hardware Engineering team is seeking a Hardware Rework Technician for its San Jose hardware development lab. The technician will perform precision PCBA modifications, fine-pitch component rework, and debug prototyping for enterprise firewall, security appliance, and hardware accelerator platforms. The role works closely with hardware design engineers, signal integrity engineers, and prototype services to carry out engineering change orders, support board bring-up, and maintain an organized, stocked lab. The position also includes assisting engineers with prototype instrumentation and validation, inspecting rework against IPC standards, and supporting mechanical chassis assembly and disassembly as time permits. The posting additionally describes module/IP verification and customer reporting tasks, including verification planning, test-bench and test-case development, regression testing, functional coverage analysis, scripting, debugging, documentation, status reports, time sheets, and written knowledge transfer.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hands-on high-density PCBA rework, micro-soldering, and electronics laboratory support in an R&D or NPI environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in miniature SMD component rework under optical magnification; the posting specifies work down to 0203 package size.
  • Ability to read schematics, board assembly drawings, CAD layout viewers such as Allegro/Cadence, and ECO markup instructions.
  • Proficiency with Metcal, JBC, or Hakko soldering stations, hot-air rework tools, digital multimeters, microscopic inspection cameras, and torque drivers.
  • Hands-on skill with electronic chassis mechanics, modular subassemblies, and thermal interface materials.
  • Strong attention to detail, proactive communication, and ability to prioritize rework queues in a fast-paced hardware development cycle.
  • Mandatory skill: VLSI Board Design.
  • The posting also lists 3–5 years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high-precision manual soldering and de-soldering of surface-mount and through-hole components under stereo microscopes.
  • Replace small passive components, fine-pitch ICs, QFNs, connectors, and discrete semiconductors without damaging adjacent board features.
  • Perform trace cuts, pad restorations, solder mask repairs, and precision jumper-wire modifications for ECOs and hardware bug fixes.
  • Build, modify, and repair cable assemblies, wire harnesses, power leads, and test/debug headers.
  • Work with electrical and diagnostic engineers to instrument prototype boards with probe wires, coaxial pigtails, and test points for oscilloscope and logic-analyzer debugging.
  • Support board bring-up rework, thermal sensor attachment, and prototype validation builds.
  • Inspect completed rework using optical inspection tools to verify adherence to IPC-A-610 and IPC-7711/7721 Class 3 standards.
  • As time permits, assist prototype services with mechanical chassis assembly and disassembly, including sheet metal, heatsinks, torque-specified fasteners, fans, and power supply modules.
  • Understand module or IP architecture and develop verification environments and plans according to Universal Verification Methodology.
  • Develop test benches and code test cases for one or multiple modules; write or review code as required.
  • Execute and debug test cases, conduct functional coverage analysis, and document test cases, failures, and debugging procedures in SharePoint, JIRA, or another directed platform.
  • Run regression testing of IP functionality, complete documentation for client publication, troubleshoot and upgrade existing systems, and write scripts for the IP.
  • Follow project plans and industry standards.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly client status reports, maintain project documents and a repository of design changes and recommendations, maintain client time sheets, and provide written project knowledge transfer/history.
