About The Position

Gilbarco Veeder-Root is seeking a senior Hardware Reliability Engineer III to support the design, validation, launch, and field performance of complex electromechanical products used in fueling and convenience retail environments. The role is primarily onsite in Greensboro, North Carolina, with some opportunity for hybrid work. The engineer will lead reliability engineering activities for hardware used in fueling and convenience retail equipment. The role owns reliability planning and deliverables for complex programs, promotes design-for-reliability practices, and partners with design, test, manufacturing, quality, and field service teams to improve durability, serviceability, and long-term product performance. The role spans the product lifecycle, from concept through production and field support. It includes planning reliability programs, assessing and reducing risk, investigating failures, developing and executing tests, analyzing field and statistical data, resolving cross-functional issues, and maintaining technical documentation. The engineer will also mentor junior engineers and contribute to reliability process and product improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience in hardware engineering, reliability engineering, validation, test engineering, quality engineering, or a related function.
  • Demonstrated experience with complex electromechanical products, industrial equipment, outdoor electronic systems, or similar hardware platforms.
  • Strong working knowledge of reliability engineering methods, including failure analysis, root cause analysis, test planning, and corrective action support.
  • Experience leading FMEA activities and driving reliability risk-reduction actions across design and process functions.
  • Ability to analyze technical data, interpret drawings and schematics, and communicate findings clearly to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Experience partnering across engineering, quality, manufacturing, supplier, and field support organizations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, lead cross-functional discussions, and influence decisions without direct authority.
  • Experience with Design for Reliability tools and field trial planning for cost-out and VAVE projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and a record of delivering concise technical documentation and recommendations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fuel dispensing, retail fueling, payment hardware, industrial controls, or outdoor electronic equipment environments.
  • Hands-on experience with reliability methods and tools such as Weibull analysis, FRACAS, reliability growth, accelerated testing, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with Weibull++, Minitab, JMP, RGA, or similar reliability and statistical software.
  • Knowledge of accelerated life testing, environmental stress testing, product qualification, and reliability validation planning.
  • Experience with hardware failure analysis techniques such as optical microscopy, X-ray, cross-sectioning, SEM, CSAM, and EDX.
  • Familiarity with warranty analysis, field issue management, and lifecycle reliability metrics.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical workstreams in a senior individual-contributor capacity.
  • Professional certification such as ASQ Certified Reliability Engineer, Certified Quality Engineer, or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Lead reliability planning, reviews, and deliverables for complex or multi-program hardware efforts from concept through production and field support.
  • Develop and own Reliability Program Plans, reliability goals, risk assessments, and milestone reporting for assigned products and subsystems.
  • Drive Design for Reliability practices, including reliability requirements flow-down, reliability growth planning, and validation strategy development.
  • Facilitate hardware, software, process, and design FMEA sessions and track actions through closure.
  • Perform and guide root cause, teardown, and failure analyses for issues found during development, qualification, manufacturing, or field use.
  • Develop and execute reliability, environmental, and accelerated life test strategies with design and test teams.
  • Analyze field returns, complaint trends, warranty data, and service history to identify recurring failure modes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead cross-functional issue resolution with design engineering, manufacturing quality, supplier quality, test labs, and service organizations.
  • Apply statistical methods and life data analysis to evaluate reliability risk, support predictions, and confirm validation results.
  • Own reliability deliverables through development and production milestones, ensuring technical documentation is clear, complete, and timely.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to reliability process improvement, lessons learned, and knowledge sharing.
  • Support continuous improvement in reliability methods, laboratory practices, test methods, and product robustness across the product lifecycle.
