About The Position

Formlabs is seeking a Hardware R&D Engineering Intern for the Fall 2026 term to join their Platform Technology team. This team is responsible for developing and maintaining Formlabs' 3D printing process, working closely with other engineering teams to research and develop next-generation printers and materials. The intern will contribute to designing, building, and innovating new 3D printing techniques, implementing improvements to current products, evaluating printer performance, and designing/executing experiments to inform software or hardware development. The role involves tackling complex, open-ended problems across multiple engineering disciplines in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Requirements

  • A portfolio of your previous engineering work/projects is required
  • Willing to question assumptions and back it up with data
  • Able to work autonomously to research
  • Experience with experiment design and data analysis
  • Understand programming and scientific computing, ideally Python or Matlab
  • Familiar with mechanical design, mechatronics, CAD modeling, and hands-on prototyping
  • Previous work on a consumer product
  • Developed physics-based models of complex systems

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and innovate new 3D printing techniques - from developing new printer architectures to validating minute changes in galvo control
  • Work across teams to help implement improvements to current products such as redesigning support structure algorithm based on experiment results
  • Evaluate current printer performance for areas for improvement
  • Design and execute experiments and use results to inform and develop improvements in software or hardware
  • Tackle complex and open-ended problems across multiple engineering disciplines
