Hardware Program Manager

Canary Technologies Corp•New York, NY
•$175,000 - $210,000

About The Position

Canary Technologies is hiring its first hardware professional to own the company’s self check-in kiosk from specification through deployment in the field. Canary does not have in-house industrial, mechanical, or electrical engineers, so external design consultants and the factory perform design work. The Hardware Program Manager will write the specifications, select consultants and the factory, and review designs for accuracy. The role does not create CAD drawings, but requires sufficient hardware design knowledge to identify errors and reject incorrect work. The manager will perform most of the hardware work personally in the first year and build a team as the function grows. The role also owns payment-terminal integration, the logistics and fulfillment pipeline from factory to hotel, pre-shipment staging, last-mile delivery coordination, spare parts, and returns for failed units. Travel to factories in Asia and hotel properties across the US, EMEA, and Asia is required; travel is expected to be around 25% during the first six months, with the amount fluctuating. Canary Technologies describes itself as a hospitality technology company whose platform supports more than 20,000 hotels in over 125 countries. Target cash compensation is $175,000–$210,000, consisting of fixed annual salary and a performance-based quarterly bonus. The role also includes a stock option grant subject to board approval. Actual compensation depends on skill level, experience, and work location.

Requirements

  • Has taken a hardware product from its first specification to units in the field at a small company and owned the whole product, rather than only one component or the schedule.
  • Has designed and built hardware, rather than purchasing a finished terminal for use in a standard enclosure.
  • Has performed substantial hands-on hardware work personally within the last six months, rather than working only through a team.
  • Has managed outside design consultants and/or a factory, including rejecting an incorrect design.
  • Knows enough industrial, mechanical, and electrical design to find errors in consultants’ or factory work; CAD production is not required.
  • Lives in New York City or is willing to relocate there.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating unattended payment terminals into a product, including terminal selection, DUKPT / P2PE key injection, installation within PCI PTS limits, and gateway / PSP certification.
  • Experience establishing fulfillment from factory to customer site, including freight, customs and duty, 3PL versus in-house warehousing, pre-shipment staging, last-mile delivery and installation coordination, spare parts, and returns.

Responsibilities

  • Own Canary’s self check-in kiosk end to end, from the initial specification to units deployed in the field.
  • Write and own the product specification used by design consultants and the factory.
  • Review designs from consultants and factories, identify errors, and reject designs that are not correct.
  • Perform the hardware review work personally during the first year, when there is no other hardware staff.
  • Build and hire the hardware team as the function grows.
  • Integrate the unattended payment terminal into the kiosk, including terminal selection, key injection (DUKPT / P2PE), installation within PCI PTS limits, and gateway / PSP certification.
  • Build the factory-to-hotel fulfillment pipeline, including freight, customs and duty, and the choice between a third-party logistics provider and an in-house warehouse.
  • Design pre-shipment staging, including imaging, key injection, kitting, and serial numbers, so kiosks arrive ready to install.
  • Coordinate last-mile delivery with hotel installation dates.
  • Own spare parts and the returns process for units that fail in the field.
  • Travel to factories in Asia and hotel properties across the US, EMEA, and Asia; travel is expected to be around 25% during the first six months.

Benefits
