About The Position

Teradyne is seeking a DC Hardware Engineering Manager for their North Reading, MA location. This role involves leading the architecture, development, and delivery of DC power supply hardware for advanced test systems. The position requires a player-coach approach, blending leadership with deep technical expertise in power electronics and DC power system design. The manager will supervise a team of design engineers, guiding the development, prototyping, and validation of DC power instruments. Collaboration with cross-functional teams including mechanical, firmware, software, systems, operations, and manufacturing engineering is essential to deliver robust, scalable power solutions. The role emphasizes meeting project goals, improving design and verification processes, and ensuring product reliability, efficiency, and manufacturability. A strong foundation in DC power supply architecture, analog/power circuit design, system integration, and digital circuit design is necessary. The manager will also be involved in defining the strategic direction of DC power architecture and digital instrumentation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in hardware engineering, with a strong background in DC power supply or power electronics design.
  • 2+ years in a managerial role, ideally in a player/coach capacity requiring both technical contribution and team management.
  • Strong people and team management skills, with direct experience in functional management of 6 or more staff members.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, analog/power circuit design, control loops, and power conversion principles.
  • Experience with lab debugging and validation tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, electronic loads, power analyzers, and related instrumentation.
  • Experience with hardware debugging tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, etc.).
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to power hardware design, validation, safety, and quality assurance. testing, and quality assurance.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage teams, collaborate cross-functionally, and communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with power supply architectures, thermal design considerations, and complex board-level power systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of hardware engineers, providing technical guidance and architectural direction for DC power supply development.

  • Actively contribute to the design, development, and validation of DC-DC VS and VI power supply hardware, with a focus on performance, efficiency, thermal behavior, and reliability.
  • Oversee schematic design, component selection, power stage topology choices, magnetics-related tradeoffs, and PCB implementation to ensure designs meet electrical and manufacturability requirements.
  • Guide design decisions related to regulation accuracy, transient response, protection features, EMI/EMC performance, and system-level integration.
  • Participate in defining the strategic direction of DC power architecture and platform capability.
  • Participate in defining the strategic direction of digital instrumentation.
  • Oversee hardware development projects from concept to production, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met while maintaining high quality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., firmware, software, mechanical, systems, operations, and manufacturing engineering) to ensure alignment and smooth project execution.
  • Provide regular updates to senior management on project status, risks, and mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate on schedule development and resource planning, supporting timely project delivery.
  • Identify areas for improvement in power hardware design, validation, and manufacturing processes, and implement best practices to enhance product quality and engineering efficiency.
  • Stay current with emerging power electronics technologies, industry trends, control methods, and validation approaches, and apply them to improve team capabilities and product offerings.
