About The Position

The Strategic Defense Solution (SDS) team in Binghamton, NY is seeking a highly motivated candidate for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Manager position. This individual will lead a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for the design, development, integration, and support of mechanical and electrical systems across our product portfolio for Department of Defense programs. This role ensures strong technical execution, effective project leadership, and alignment with organizational priorities, delivering high-quality engineering solutions that meet performance, safety, cost, and schedule requirements – directly enables mission success.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience.
  • Strong background in mechanical and/or electrical system design.
  • Previous experience in leading technical teams and managing cross-functional projects.
  • Highly self-motivated leader capable of fostering a positive, accountable team culture.
  • Demonstrated background in strong communication, effective prioritization, and analytical abilities.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in engineering standards, safety codes, compliance requirements, equipment engineering, product development, and/or mechanical/electrical design software.
  • Demonstrated adaptability and resilience in dynamic environments with changing priorities and resource constraints.
  • Ability to assess engineering performance against plans and proactively drive corrective actions.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining staffing plans, including recruiting, hiring, and onboarding.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian tool suite, including JIRA.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, review, and provide technical guidance for proposal and capture activities, ensuring credible, executable engineering content.
  • Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Program Management to support new products, equipment upgrades, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Translate technical requirements into actionable plans understood across disciplines.
  • Build strong relationships to enable efficient problem solving and project execution.
  • Partner with peers and leadership to plan and execute broader departmental and strategic initiatives.
  • Manage resource allocation, schedules, and priorities across multiple engineering projects.
  • Own engineering execution ensuring deliverables/scope meet cost, performance, and timeline objectives, with direct involvement in project planning, Earned Value Management (EVM), and risk management activities.
  • Apply structured project management methods to maintain transparency and predictable outcomes.
  • Lead root-cause analysis efforts to resolve complex equipment or product issues.
  • Use data-driven decision-making to evaluate trade-offs and select optimal solutions.
  • Escalate risks proactively and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve engineering processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Promote creativity, experimentation, and modern engineering techniques.
  • Contribute to long-term technology roadmaps and equipment strategies.
