Hardware Engineering Intern

Meter•San Francisco, CA
•$40 - $50

About The Position

Meter is hiring Hardware Engineering Interns to work on real technical problems across its hardware engineering and operations teams. During the 12-week internship, each intern will own a well-scoped project selected to align with their interests and experience and with Meter’s needs. Potential projects include prototyping next-generation power adapters; exploring ways to refurbish, reuse, or recycle hardware and extend its useful life; developing installer tools, fixtures, or diagnostic devices; designing acoustic and thermal systems; and using component and supplier data to identify supply-chain risks and bottlenecks. Interns will take a hardware problem from an open question to an evidence-backed recommendation and leave behind useful work such as data, prototypes, test results, engineering requirements, supplier evaluations, or tools. Depending on the project, work may involve designing and testing electrical or mechanical prototypes, evaluating components and suppliers, creating test plans and characterizing system performance, working with manufacturing partners in Taiwan, and presenting findings to the hardware team.

Requirements

  • Be pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Be curious and hands-on, and be willing to learn by building.
  • Be able to break ambiguous technical problems into questions that can be answered through engineering and experimentation.
  • Have built, tested, debugged, or taken apart hardware on a design team, in a lab, or at home, or be eager to start.
  • Be comfortable working with physical systems such as PCBAs, mechanical assemblies, test equipment, prototypes, manufacturing data, or supplier samples.
  • Be able to explain technical findings clearly and turn work into actionable recommendations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with PCB design, CAD, embedded systems, thermal design, or data analysis; these are not required.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test electrical or mechanical prototypes for future Meter products.
  • Evaluate components, technologies, architectures, materials, and suppliers.
  • Write test plans and characterize performance, reliability, thermals, acoustics, power, and other system-level behavior.
  • Work with manufacturing partners in Taiwan to understand their capabilities, constraints, cost, and scalability.
  • Present findings and recommendations to the hardware team at the end of the internship.
  • Deliver evidence-backed recommendations and leave useful outputs such as data, prototypes, test results, engineering requirements, supplier evaluations, or tools.

Benefits

  • Relocation stipend
  • Housing stipend
