Hardware Design Engineer II, Vulcan Stow

AmazonSeattle, WA
$117,300 - $160,000Onsite

About The Position

As a Hardware Development Engineer II on the Amazon Robotics team, you will design, develop, validate, and sustain electromechanical hardware for robotic systems deployed at scale in fulfillment centers. You will own component-level design through full product lifecycle — from concept and prototyping through volume production and field support. You will work with an interdisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, controls, software, perception and manufacturing engineers to deliver robust, cost-effective hardware that meets the demands of 24/7 fulfillment operations. This role requires a hands-on engineer who exhibits thorough engineering analysis and cradle-to-grave ownership of their designs. You will balance new product introduction (NPI) development work with keep-the-lights-on (KTLO) sustaining engineering responsibilities for fielded systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 2+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience with prototyping and implementation

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of SolidWorks simulation or Ansys Finite Element analysis tools
  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience

Responsibilities

  • Work with an interdisciplinary team to improve and maintain existing product designs including specification, design, prototyping, validation, and testing of electromechanical robotic components and assemblies
  • Design parts for volume manufacturing methods including sheet metal fabrication, injection molded plastics, high-pressure die casting, stamping, extrusion, and machining — understanding the trade-offs between each method
  • Apply Design for Excellence (DfX) principles throughout the design process: design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), design for maintenance, design for reliability, and design for installation
  • Write requirements and functional specifications, design verification plans (DVPs), and functional test procedures
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings per GD&T (ASME Y14.5) standards
  • Develop and deliver high-quality design artifacts: CAD models, detailed drawings with specifications, bills of materials, trade studies, test plans, and engineering analyses
  • Use statistical analysis methods for design of experiments (DOE) and data processing to validate design performance and drive data-informed decisions
  • Work with Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality organizations as well as external vendors to ensure smooth production transition of design changes
  • Support make-vs-buy trade-off decisions and partner with suppliers to optimize cost, quality, and lead time for components produced at scale
  • Drive cost reduction initiatives through material optimization, design simplification, and manufacturing process improvements
  • Provide design for manufacturability feedback during design reviews and collaborate with Process Engineering on assembly sequences, work instructions, and tooling requirements
  • Own cradle-to-grave lifecycle support for fielded hardware, including root cause analysis, corrective actions, and engineering change orders (ECOs)
  • Investigate field failures, conduct failure analysis, and implement design improvements that reduce downtime and improve system reliability
  • Support fulfillment center operations teams with technical guidance on hardware installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Monitor field performance data and quality metrics to proactively identify and address emerging issues before they impact operations at scale
  • Design hardware in compliance with applicable machine safety standards (e.g., ANSI/RIA 15.06, ISO 13849, IEC 62061) and functional safety requirements
  • Participate in risk assessments and contribute to safety validation activities for robotic workcell systems
  • Ensure designs meet relevant industry, regulatory, and Amazon internal safety and quality standards
  • Operate within an Agile Product Lifecycle framework, delivering iterative design improvements aligned with sprint and release cadences
  • Participate in design reviews, retrospectives, and cross-functional planning discussions
  • Develop software, or scripts as needed to aid hardware development, testing, or validation
  • Begin mentoring peers and contribute to the hiring and interview process for the team
