About The Position

The Docks & Harbors Department is hiring a Seasonal Harbor Technician to join our team. We are seeking individuals interested in seasonal employment during the summer months who enjoy working outdoors on the docks and around vessels. This position offers a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic waterfront environment while interacting with visitors from around the world.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • None (minimum experience)
  • Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment
  • A valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment
  • Ability to research and interpret regulations
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of tenants and members of the public while supporting the enforcement of rules and regulations
  • Ability to exercise tact, self-restraint, judgment, and strategy in dealing with a variety of people
  • Strong oral and written skills
  • Ability to exercise tact, self-restraint, sound judgment, and professionalism when dealing with a variety of people
  • Ability to work and collaborate with multiple state and federal agencies
  • Ability to interpret and support applicable sections of 33 CFR Part 105 as they relate to the department’s Facility Security Plans (FSP)
  • Selected candidate will be required to sign non-disclosure agreements for sensitive security information
  • Selected candidate must be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Workers Identification credential (TWIC)

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in vessel operation exceeding 18ft in length including VHF radio communications experience is desired.
  • Background in Customer Service.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Harbor Officers with the operation, maintenance, and management of the City and Borough of Juneau’s docks, harbors, and associated facilities.
  • Perform customer service duties.
  • Assist with Port of Juneau security during cruise ship port calls, which may include checking identification, assisting with passenger screening, conducting patrols aboard the port security vessel, and supporting vendor and loading zone operations.
  • Track and log facility and service use.
  • Provide customer service to patrons.
  • Hook-up water and electrical services.
  • Assist with routine clerical assignments.
  • Make minor repairs.
  • Paint buildings and structures.
  • Work with Administrative Staff to resolve moorage and maintenance issues throughout the harbor system.
  • Assist Harbor Officers with Port Security.
  • Serve as a deck hand on the Port of Juneau Security Vessel.
  • Help conduct inspections and patrols of infrastructure and facilities for suspicious packages and persons.
  • Mark restricted areas with fencing and other barriers.
  • Report security threats and incidents to the immediate supervisor.
  • Assist CBJ emergency response personnel as needed to respond to security incidents.
  • Perform facility evacuation procedures.
  • Assist with vendor and loading zone management.
  • Check vehicle, driver, and vendor identification.
  • Ensure vendors and drivers do not sell tours in loading zones.
  • Ensure vehicles are in appropriate lanes and do not stay beyond zone time limits.
  • Report violations to the immediate supervisor.
  • Operate and/or assist with portable sewage pump.
  • Operate and/or assist with hydraulic boat lift.
  • Establish restricted areas with fencing and other equipment.
  • Control entry of persons, vehicles and cargo into restricted areas.
  • Report security incidents.
  • Identify and report violations.
  • Issue requests for corrections, and notices of violations.
  • Maintain cleanliness of facilities.
  • Pick up and dispose of trash.
  • Remove unwanted debris from facilities.
  • Wash and power wash decks, sidewalks, and structures.
  • Clean stains from parking lots.
  • Assist in snow removal.
  • Provide information to the general public on harbor rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Operate light trucks and passenger vehicles.
  • Provide customer service to patrons.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
