About The Position

James Madison University (JMU) is seeking a Full-Time Hall Director for its Residence Life department. Residence Life is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment that promotes academic success, respect, personal growth, and community responsibility. This is a 12-month, live-in position that reports to an Area Director of Residence Life. The role includes a furnished apartment (partner and pet-friendly), professional development funds, and a partial meal plan, in addition to salary and classified benefits. The Hall Director will be part of a team serving over 6,900 residential students on a growing campus, focusing on creating a residential experience rich with opportunities for student engagement and self-discovery. The department is a close-knit group comprising over 35 full-time staff members and over 250 student staff members.

Requirements

  • Experience in Residence Life (student employment, graduate assistant, or full-time experience considered)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to crisis and emergencies
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check
  • Completion of an I-9 form and presentation of documentation of identity and eligibility to work in the United States

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related field
  • Extensive experience in residence life or student housing
  • Prior supervisory experience, including training and supporting student staff
  • Experience with student conduct processes and behavior management
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational management skills

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise 11-18 Resident Advisers (RAs), managing their performance, student development, leadership, conduct, and hall community engagement.
  • Provide written performance evaluations for RAs twice per year.
  • Participate in all recruitment, selection, and training processes for RAs, including instructing a one-credit RA class.
  • Implement check-in and check-out procedures for residents.
  • Potentially collaborate with a live-in Faculty in Residence member.
  • Contribute to the Student Affairs Creating Belonging value by fostering an inclusive culture that celebrates all identities.
  • Interpret and enforce university and hall policies, managing administrative processes for student behavior documentation and follow-up.
  • Meet with students and staff to discuss and manage behavioral concerns, including mental health, policy/community violations, and roommate conflicts.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for the residential campus and provide support to staff during crises.
  • Conduct and support hall programming and community engagement efforts using the Curricular Approach in Residence Life’s Residential Educational Plan.
  • Create Community Learning Plans to support the educational development of residential students.
  • Serve on departmental and university committees as necessary.
  • Accumulate a minimum of 10 hours of professional development per performance evaluation period through training, conferences, certifications, or other job-related activities to stay current with trends and best practices.
