About The Position

This internship is for the Summer session (May - August) and is located in Watertown, SD. The intern will assist habitat staff with various tasks related to habitat management, including planning, preparation, and planting of grass and food plots, tree clearing and planting, weed fabric installation, noxious weed control, fence construction, prescribed fire, area signing, and other assigned duties. The intern will gain knowledge of basic habitat management principles and have opportunities to attend external and internal trainings. Required training includes S130/190, prescribed fire field day, pack test, and herbicide application testing. The intern may also assist with wildlife surveys and bird banding.

Requirements

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student (minimum of 6 credit hours) in the upcoming semester or in the immediately preceding semester.
By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
Must be a current part-time or full-time student.

Nice To Haves

Experience using tractors, trucks, ATVs, and herbicide application equipment is preferred.
Preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior.
Preference may be given to South Dakota residents.
Preference may be given to students of South Dakota institutions.

Responsibilities

Assist habitat staff with planning, preparation, and planting of grass and food plots.
Participate in tree clearing and planting.
Install weed fabric and perform noxious weed control.
Assist with fence construction.
Engage in prescribed fire activities.
Help with area signing.
Complete assigned duties as directed.
Take S130/190, prescribed fire field day, pack test, and complete herbicide application testing.
Potentially assist with wildlife surveys and bird banding.
