About The Position

This position monitors participants in the Wellness Center to ensure a safe exercising environment and assists in customer service relations. Responsibilities include coordinating and implementing fitness programs, responding to member needs, providing membership information, instructing members on exercise programs and equipment use, and supervising member activity and conduct. The incumbent works with general guidance, developing methods and sequences under supervision. The work is light, involving walking or standing most of the time, and may involve exerting up to 20 pounds of force. It requires skills in using electronic office machines or tools within moderate tolerances. Physical abilities needed include crouching, fingering, mental acuity, reaching, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work environment may involve exposure to various conditions such as bright/dim light, dusts, pollen, extreme temperatures, wet/humid conditions, fumes, odors, traffic, chemicals, and potential violence. The dynamic environment requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to evolving goals, priorities, and needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of relevant prior experience
  • Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages
  • Ability to coordinate or determine time, place or sequence of operations or activities based on analysis of data or information and may implement and report on operations and activities
  • Ability to provide information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants
  • Ability to handle or use machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, fax machines, copiers, telephones or similar equipment; may service office machines, including adding paper and changing toner
  • Ability to perform coordinating work involving guidelines and rules, with constant problem-solving
  • Ability to read routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar
  • Ability to perform specialized technical or entry-level professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices or the use of a wide range of administrative methods in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure
  • Ability to guide others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and supervises activity in the gym.
  • Monitors orderly operation of the fitness room.
  • Ensures participant compliance with established rules and regulations, and standards of safety.
  • Instructs groups and individuals in recreational activities as appropriate.
  • Inspects grounds and facilities for security and safety, and takes appropriate steps to ensure the safety of all staff and citizens and the protection of City property.
  • Monitors building safety, security, and housekeeping issues.
  • Respectfully enforces all rules and regulations and clarifies rules for participants, ensuring that horseplay/rough play does not occur.
  • Implements emergency procedures as needed for incidents, including medical problems and incidents that endanger the safety of participants.
  • Assists Buildings and Grounds staff with set-up and clean-up of rooms and programs.
  • Monitors all equipment for possible hazardous conditions and removes it from the gym area; reports hazardous equipment to the immediate supervisor.
  • Cleans, performs minor repairs (replace hoops and nets, etc.), and maintains the basketball court.
  • Performs basic building and grounds maintenance work as necessary.
  • Assists in coordinating activities and functions with those of other divisions, departments, and outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints, and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility.
  • Performs general clerical work as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, attending meetings, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Collects and accounts for program fee payments.
  • Attends meetings, workshops, conferences, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
