About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Latino Arts Strings Program Director and Guitar Program Coordinator, this part-time position plans and implements individual and small group lessons for guitar students ranging from beginning to advanced level. The role utilizes a variety of classical pedagogical approaches and requires knowledge of Latin American music (classical and folk) and culture, with a focus on performance of various genres such as Mariachi, Charanga, Son Huasteco, Andean music, and Tango. The instructor will evaluate student achievement and prepare students for classical solo recitals and ensemble concerts, as well as Mariachi and Latin American music concerts. Individual lessons will focus on technique, music reading, rhythmic knowledge, and music theory fundamentals, while group lessons will emphasize technique, music theory, ear training, and repertoire development. The position collaborates with the LASP team to develop concerts and supports the Latin American music heritage arm of the program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in music performance, music education, or string pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of or interest and willingness to learn Latin American genres in order to support the heritage education goals of the LASP.
  • Interest in working with a program that combines European Classical music training with Latin American classical and folk music.
  • Loves working with children of all ages.
  • Has training to work with children ages 5-18.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and implements individual and small group lessons for guitar students.
  • Uses a variety of classical pedagogical approaches.
  • Brings knowledge of Latin American music (classical and folk) and culture, with a focus on performance of various genres.
  • Evaluates student achievement and prepares students for classical solo recitals and ensemble concerts, as well as Mariachi and Latin American music concerts.
  • Plans individual lessons with a focus on technique, music reading, rhythmic knowledge, and music theory fundamentals.
  • Plans group lessons with a focus on technique, music theory, ear training, and repertoire development.
  • Collaborates with the LASP team to develop concerts.
  • Supports the Latin American music heritage arm of the program.
  • Teaches guitar with a focus on solid classical technique, note reading, music theory, musicality, and performance training.
  • Uses all tools for technique development available: scales, arpeggios, etudes, and the like.
  • Teaches small group lessons for single-instrument groups of students at the same technical level.
  • Prepares students for classical solo recitals at an average of 2-3 recitals a year, including District and State Solo Festivals when appropriate.
  • Prepares students for auditions to the LASP performance ensembles and for the LASP Guitar Festival competition and the WSMA District and State Festivals.
  • Provides instruction by developing, selecting, and modifying instructional plans and materials and presenting them using instructional techniques which meet the needs of all students.
  • Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students.
  • Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings and activities.
  • Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Monitors and evaluates student performance.
  • Develops and implements plans to improve student performance.
  • Maintains required records and follows required procedures and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or department leadership to support the needs and goals of the organization.
