About The Position

Northrop Grumman Aeronautic Systems is hiring a Guidance Navigation Control (GNC) Engineer for its team in San Diego, California. The role works in a multidisciplinary team to design, develop, implement, verify, and test algorithms, software, and simulation tools for aircraft guidance, navigation, and control. The engineer develops control laws to meet air-vehicle performance, flying-qualities, and stability-margin requirements on the ground and in flight; develops linear and nonlinear air-vehicle dynamic simulation models and integrates them into software- and hardware-in-the-loop environments; and analyzes flight-test data while supporting flight-test activities. The position is assigned to a 1st-shift 9/80 schedule, includes travel 10% of the time, and requires an active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance to start. The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain Special Access Program access through a Program Access Request before employment begins and obtain subsequent SAP access as needed to support the work. Relocation assistance may be available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and 2 years of related engineering experience, or a master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 0 years of related engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of fixed-wing aircraft flight dynamics.
  • Experience using linear control principles and tools to design feedback control systems.
  • Experience using MATLAB to create, process, analyze, and visually represent data.
  • Active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance, with a background investigation within the past 5 years or enrollment in Continuous Evaluation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain initial Special Access Program access via a Program Access Request before employment begins, within a reasonable timeframe determined by the company.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain subsequent SAP Program Access Requests after employment begins to support the statement of work.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for positions requiring a government clearance.

  • Experience analyzing nonlinear simulations of aircraft closed-loop dynamics.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience designing control laws for fixed-wing aircraft and performing handling-qualities analyses.
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-1797 flying-qualities requirements.
  • Current applicable Special Access Program clearance.
  • Active U.S. Government Top Secret SCI clearance, with a background investigation within the past 5 years or enrollment in Continuous Evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, verify, and test algorithms, software, and simulation tools for aircraft guidance, navigation, and control.
