Guidance Navigation & Control Engineers (Experienced, Lead, Senior)

Boeing•Aurora, CO
•$119,850 - $239,200•Onsite

About The Position

Boeing Defense, Space & Security’s Experimental Systems Group (ESG) is hiring experienced, lead, and senior Guidance Navigation & Control (GN&C) Engineers in Seal Beach or El Segundo, California, or Denver, Colorado. The team rapidly prototypes, develops, and fields novel space capabilities in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, including work associated with the X-37B. Engineers design GN&C algorithms, build high-fidelity simulations, implement and test flight software, and support integration and flight testing in space environments. The roles also involve developing advanced technical capabilities and, depending on level and duties, leading engineering project teams. The positions require a Bachelor of Science degree in a related technical field, an active Tier 5 clearance (formerly SSBI), at least five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience, spacecraft engineering experience, and experience with MATLAB, Simulink, and GN&C algorithms, models, and simulations. The posting describes different experience levels: Level 3, 5 or more years; Level 4, 9 or more years; and Level 5, 14 or more years, or equivalent combinations of technical education and experience. The position requires a current Tier 5 clearance or agreement to enter a Continuous Evaluation program, and U.S. citizenship is required for the stated clearance. Candidates must also meet U.S. export control requirements as a U.S. Person. Boeing will not sponsor employment visas. Successful candidates must satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process. This is not a Safety Sensitive Position and is not contingent upon program award. Relocation may be offered based on eligibility. The position is listed as Shift 1.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a directly related non-U.S. equivalent qualification.
  • Active Tier 5 (T5) clearance, formerly known as Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI); the posting also states a current T5 clearance or agreement to enter a Continuous Evaluation program, and U.S. citizenship is required for the stated clearance.
  • At least 5 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Engineering experience with spacecraft.
  • Experience using MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Experience developing GN&C algorithms, models, and simulations.
  • Meet U.S. export control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.
  • Satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Nice To Haves

  • Level 5: 14 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Level 4: 9 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
  • Level 3: 5 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
  • Ability to work effectively in broad, minimally defined design spaces and communicate technical results clearly.
  • Experience with spacecraft operations and space environment effects.
  • Programming experience in C/C++ or comparable languages sufficient to implement and test GN&C algorithms.
  • Familiarity with state estimation and sensor fusion, such as Kalman filters, and GPS/INS.
  • Background in classical and modern control theory and nonlinear control design.
  • Model-based development experience and flight test support.
  • Leadership skills to lead and influence positive outcomes.
  • Previous experience leading, mentoring, and engaging individuals and teams.
  • Experience providing active mentorship and career guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and verify guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for spacecraft.
  • Develop and maintain six-degree-of-freedom dynamics simulations and analysis tools for mission and performance assessment.

  • Apply astrodynamics and flight mechanics to mission design, novel orbit concepts, and trajectory optimization.
  • Develop powered and unpowered guidance laws and autonomy tools for on-orbit operations.
  • Support troubleshooting of operational anomalies, functional tests, and service incidents.
  • Produce concepts of operations, simulation artifacts, and test procedures to support rapid iteration from prototype to flight test.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, avionics, test, and business development teams, and communicate technical tradeoffs to stakeholders.
  • Identify inefficiencies independently, propose solutions, and implement reusable tools and automations.
  • Lead engineering project teams, mentor engineers, and advance GN&C job practices and techniques.

Benefits
