About The Position

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is seeking a Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineer (Lead or Senior) to join the Flying Qualities and Autonomy Technology Group as part of the Vertical Lift Division located in Ridley Park, PA. We participate in all phases of design and testing, and support all of Boeing’s vertical lift aircraft, including the Apache, AH-6, Chinook, MH-139, V-22 Osprey, and other developmental aircraft. The ideal candidate will help lead a high-performing team that directly supports the design of new and modified rotorcraft from a stability, flight control, and handing qualities perspective. As a key member of our team, you will support the design of flight control systems and model/analyze air vehicle stability and control characteristics to ensure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement
  • 5+ years’ experience with Matlab/Simulink
  • 5+ years’ experience and/or education in aircraft stability and control
  • 5+ years’ experience in team or project leadership
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.
  • Must meet U.S. export control compliance requirements. To meet U.S. export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.62 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Nice To Haves

  • 10 or more years’ relevant work experience
  • MS or PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience designing flight control laws for rotorcraft
  • Experience supporting rotorcraft flight test
  • Experience in linear stability analysis including aero-servo-elastic effects.
  • 5+ years’ experience with C, C++, and/or FORTRAN

Responsibilities

  • Ability to lead a team of high performing engineers, including coordination with program leadership, ability to establish and meet technical, quality and efficiency metrics, and focus on development of teammates in the key Flying Qualities skill areas
  • Ability to lead and contribute to flight control law design efforts involving application of control theory to achieve desired characteristics for dynamic control response, gust or disturbance rejection, system failure robustness, and loads considerations.
  • Ability to lead and contribute to development and validation of physics-based linear flight simulation models that include mathematical models of various rotorcraft components (main rotor, tail rotor, fuselage) and participate in wind-tunnel/flight testing to support model validation
  • Ability to lead and contribute to design of new and modified rotorcraft configurations from a stability, control, and handling qualities perspective.
  • Ability to lead and contribute to wind tunnel testing, pilot-in-the-loop flight simulation, hardware in the loop laboratory testing, and flight testing in support of vehicle design and analysis.
  • Apply tools such as Matlab/Simulink and other modern and legacy programing languages in both Windows and Unix-based environments.
  • Collaborate with test pilots and with engineers in other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, dynamics, avionics systems, structural design, and crew systems design, to optimize vehicle level characteristics.
  • Occasional travel to support flight testing at off-site locations. These test sites could include cold weather sites, high altitude sites, or ships at sea.
  • Support training/mentoring other team members
