Guidance Nav & Control Engr (Astrodynamics Analysis)

Boeing•Aurora, CO
•$119,850 - $239,200•Onsite

About The Position

Boeing Defense, Space & Security’s Experimental Systems Group (ESG) is hiring experienced, lead, and senior Guidance Navigation & Control Engineers to work in Seal Beach or El Segundo, California, or Denver, Colorado. The team rapidly prototypes, develops, and fields novel space capabilities, delivering first-of-kind solutions in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment that includes the X-37B autonomous reusable spaceplane. The role involves designing GN&C algorithms, building high-fidelity simulations, implementing and testing flight software, and supporting integration and flight tests in space environments. Engineers develop advanced technical capabilities and may lead engineering project teams. The position requires an active Tier 5 clearance and a U.S. Person for export-control compliance. Boeing will not sponsor employment visas. Successful candidates must satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a directly related non-U.S. equivalent qualification.
  • Active Tier 5 (T5) clearance, formerly known as Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI).
  • At least 5 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Engineering experience with spacecraft.
  • Experience using MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Experience developing GN&C algorithms, models, and simulations.
  • Must meet U.S. export control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person; the posting defines this to include U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees.
  • Must satisfy Boeing’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Nice To Haves

  • For Level 5: 14 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • For Level 4: 9 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
  • For Level 3: 5 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
  • Ability to work effectively in broad, minimally defined design spaces and communicate technical results clearly.
  • Experience with spacecraft operations and space environment effects.
  • Programming experience in C/C++ or comparable languages sufficient to implement and test GN&C algorithms.
  • Familiarity with state estimation and sensor fusion, such as Kalman filters, and GPS/INS.
  • Background in classical and modern control theory and nonlinear control design.
  • Model-based development experience and flight test support.
  • Leadership skills to lead and influence positive outcomes.
  • Previous experience leading, mentoring, and engaging individuals and teams.
  • Experience providing active mentorship and career guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and verify guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for spacecraft.
  • Develop and maintain six-degree-of-freedom dynamics simulations and analysis tools for mission and performance assessment.
  • Implement and validate GN&C flight software, including MATLAB/Simulink models and C/C++ prototypes, and integrate it with testbeds and avionics.
  • Apply astrodynamics and flight mechanics to mission design, novel orbit concepts, and trajectory optimization.
  • Develop powered and unpowered guidance laws and autonomy tools for on-orbit operations.
  • Support troubleshooting of operational anomalies, functional tests, and service incidents.
  • Produce concepts of operations, simulation artifacts, and test procedures to enable rapid iteration from prototype to flight test.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, avionics, test, and business development teams, and communicate technical tradeoffs to stakeholders.
  • Identify inefficiencies independently, propose solutions, and implement reusable tools and automations.
  • Lead engineering project teams, mentor engineers, and advance GN&C job practices and techniques.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Eligible employees may enroll in benefit programs generally including health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance, and paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Relocation may be offered based on candidate eligibility.
