About The Position

The Guidance Counselor at Wayland Elementary is responsible for directing and coordinating pupil services. The role assists all students in overcoming barriers to learning and helps them develop skills in personal/social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational planning. This position requires adherence to professional codes of ethics and school board policies, as well as a commitment to ongoing professional development and promoting best practices in school counseling.

Requirements

  • Kentucky certificate, license, or other legal credentials required.
  • Experience and other qualifications as specified by the Superintendent.
  • Ability to work effectively with students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Define needs and priorities for the guidance program.
  • Determine objectives for the guidance program.
  • Communicate with stakeholders about the design, importance, and effectiveness of the program.
  • Organize personnel, physical resources, and activities to meet program needs and objectives.
  • Evaluate the program's contribution to the school's mission and goals.
  • Utilize information systems and technology.
  • Assess the developmental needs of students.
  • Address academic expectations and school-to-work initiatives.
  • Prepare students for successful transitions.
  • Evaluate the results of the guidance curriculum's impact.
  • Modify the curriculum as needed to meet student needs.
  • Guide individuals and groups of students through educational and career plans.
  • Provide guidance for maximizing personal growth and development.
  • Teach the school developmental guidance curriculum.
  • Assist teachers in teaching the guidance curriculum.
  • Provide a safe, confidential setting for students to present needs and concerns.
  • Promote wellness among students.
  • Respond to crises.
  • Communicate empathy and understanding to students.
  • Utilize a broad range of techniques and accepted theories appropriate to school counseling.
  • Utilize assessment tools, individual planning skills, and counseling to facilitate informed choices.
  • Intervene in problem/conflict situations and conduct follow-up sessions.
  • Respect and nurture the uniqueness of each student.
  • Mediate classroom and student conflict.
  • Empower students to develop and use their resources.
  • Consult with parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and others to enhance their work with students.
  • Interpret relevant information concerning the developmental needs of students.
  • Reduce barriers to student learning through direct referred services.
  • Facilitate new student integration into the school environment.
  • Work with teachers to provide support for students in crisis situations.
  • Interact with school councils, school boards, Family Resource/Youth Service Center Advisory Councils, and/or school committees.
  • Facilitate successful communication between and among teachers, parents, and students.
  • Work with teachers and administrators regarding behavior management to promote and support intervention strategies.
  • Consult with external community and professional resources.
  • Coordinate with school and community personnel to provide resources for students.
  • Use an effective referral process for assisting students and others to use special programs and services.
  • Identify community agencies for referral of students.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with community resources.
  • Facilitate successful transition from one level of education to the next.
  • Participate in the planning and evaluation of the district/school testing program.
  • Assess, interpret, and communicate learning results to students, faculty, parents, and community.
  • Collaborate with staff concerning the assessment of special needs students.
  • Use assessment results and other sources of student data in formulating student career/graduation plans.
  • Coordinate student records to ensure the confidentiality of assessment data.
  • Provide orientation sessions for faculty, students, and parents regarding the assessment program.
  • Adhere to professional codes of ethics.
  • Adhere to school board policies and administrative procedures.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and good attendance.
  • Adhere to federal/state laws and regulations related to education and child protection.
  • Be responsible for ongoing professional development.
