About The Position

The Guidance Counselor assists students in developing skills related to personal-social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development. This role involves registering and orienting students, aiding in course selection, maintaining confidential student records, and working to resolve educational challenges and develop student abilities. The counselor also aims to prevent students from dropping out, provides student information to colleges and employers, makes recommendations for admissions and scholarships, guides student participation in school activities, and works with students individually on personal problems. Additionally, the role includes conferring with parents, coordinating and interpreting achievement and special testing, evaluating students for special education placement, and demonstrating competence in legal and ethical counseling standards. The position also involves providing individual and classroom counseling, educational/career/vocational placement, referral, and follow-up, as well as gathering and utilizing student data for assessment and referral. Related duties as assigned are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Kentucky Department of Education certification for counselor.
  • Experience and other qualifications as the superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Register and orient students to the school.
  • Aid students in course and subject selection.
  • Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
  • Work to resolve students’ educational handicaps.
  • Work to discover and develop special abilities of students.
  • Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  • Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board’s policy of student records.
  • Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships.
  • Guide students in their participation in school.
  • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems.
  • Confer with parents.
  • Coordinate achievement testing and other special testing for the school and interpret scores to students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Evaluate students for special education placement if training requirements are met.
  • Demonstrate competence in the knowledge and application of Legal and Ethical Counseling Standards.
  • Provide individual and classroom counseling and guidance.
  • Provide appropriate educational, career, and vocational placement, referral and follow-up.
  • Gather and utilize student data for assessment appraisal and referral.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
