About The Position

The Underwriting Team is looking for an analytical, self-starter to join the unit as an Underwriter. Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, the Underwriting position is accountable for analyzing group characteristics, benefits and plan design in order to appropriately price and win new group business or retain existing business. This role will involve analyzing the rating information, assessing the group’s specific risk characteristics as well as delivering clear, accurate and complete quotes to our Manulife Account Executives.

Requirements

  • Post Secondary education with business, mathematical and analytical aptitude.
  • Understanding of the Group Insurance market, products and services
  • Experience within Group Benefits
  • Proven ability to effectively partner with and support sales teams.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills with exceptional proficiency in Excel (data manipulation such as pivot tables) and Word
  • Ability to make well-balanced decisions that take effective risk management, financial discipline and customer needs into account.
  • Motivated self-starter and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage multiple priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • CEBS, GBA certification is encouraged and recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze group characteristics, benefits, and plan designs
  • Analyze premium and claims information in order to appropriately price new business
  • Provide underwriting decisions through clear verbal and written communications
  • Conduct constructive negotiations utilizing underwriting judgment and guidelines
  • Evaluate and act on risk propositions
  • Accurately price new and existing business opportunities
  • Provide value added underwriting and benefit recommendations to maximize the clients' group benefit spend
