About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director, Instructional Programs, Group Fitness Instructor shall develop and implement an appropriate group fitness class emphasizing fun, safety, and effective conditioning. Instructors shall have a complete and thorough understanding of all policies and procedures concerning the Group Exercise program and Department of Wellness and Recreation. Policies are covered in the DWR Student Employee Handbook, Fitness Instructor Manual, schedules and training sessions.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current nationally recognized fitness certification (ACE, ACSM, NASM, AFAA, or equivalent).
  • Ability to conduct safe and effective classes.
  • Knowledgeable in techniques and dynamics of group exercise.
  • Knowledge in a variety of group exercise class formats.
  • Possession of current certification(s) for specific class formats, including adult CPR/AED.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular exercise and strength training principles.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Must adhere to the Wellness and Recreation and University policies and procedures.
  • Must be reliable and dependable.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience teaching or leading group exercise classes.
  • Available to work during winter and summer breaks.

Responsibilities

  • Be present at least 10 minutes before class starting time and available at least 10 minutes after class end time.
  • Clock in for respective classes and record attendance of each class.
  • Use the microphone headset at all times during class. Turn off the microphone and stereo after each use and store appropriately. Learn and adhere to the battery rotation system.
  • Ensure general cleanliness and safety of the room before, during, and after class. Leave equipment storage areas and equipment in good order after each class.
  • Find appropriate substitutes before class. Notify the Assistant Director at least 24 hours prior to class of the substitution.
  • Make a personal commitment to ensure the satisfaction of all participants, treat all participants with respect, concern and give personal attention when needed.
  • Abide by any/all other DWR policies and perform any other duties as assigned.
